The University of the Free State (UFS) will begin the defence of their Varsity Football title on Friday and, as is the nature of the competition, they will need to be at their best from the opening whistle when they host the ever-dangerous University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) at Shimla Park in Bloemfontein. There is certainly pressure on UFS, given the quality of their opponents, while they will also have a target on their backs after their remarkable 2025 campaign, during which they defied the odds to win the title. The man who masterminded that memorable triumph was head coach Mokete Tsotetsi. He has since had more time to work with his squad and mould them into a team he believes is capable of successfully defending their crown. “Going into the tournament as defending champions, it’s not easy,” said Tsotetsi. “Obviously, we need to be confident and believe that we can retain the championship. The confidence is there because of the way we’ve been preparing.” The former Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs centre-back stressed the importance of learning from the past without dwelling on it, choosing instead to focus on the challenge ahead. “We need to put last year behind us as history and focus on the future,” Tsotetsi added. “We take what we did right and try to improve on it, while also looking at where we can be better. This is a new year and a new tournament. “Teams will approach games differently now because we are the champions. We’re not forgetting what happened, but we’re taking the positives from last year and building on them. “We still have about 70% of the squad that participated last year, with some new players coming in. It’s a good balance. The core of the team is still there, and the new players have added to the group.” The UFS Blues will kick-off their eagerly anticipated title defence against UP-Tuks at Shimla Park on Friday, with kick-off scheduled for 17:00. Wits head into the 2026 Varsity Football tournament with high hopes of securing a semi-final spot as the new season gets underway on 7 August. The Johannesburg outfit will be eager to make a strong start and mount a serious challenge for the title. After falling short in last year's round-robin stage and navigating a challenging qualification campaign for 2026, Wits are determined to deliver a more consistent performance in their bid for a place in the semi-finals. With the Educated Footballers facing ‘dark horses’ UWC up first, head coach Thanduxolo Zulu is optimistic on the upcoming season. However, he is keeping his cards close to his chest on how to tackle their first fixture. “UWC is a team we were grouped with at USSA (University Sports South Africa), and it’s a team that we’re well aware of at an USSA level when we were playing in December. However, we know a lot of teams do change. We know there will be a couple changes in the team setup,” said Zulu. “If their coach hasn’t changed, chances are their approach would be quite similar with a few differences here and there.” There are several players returning from last season, including captain Kgwadi Molepo and goalkeeper Lwando Mvinjana. Zulu believes while these are players who bolster the team’s strength due to their experience, he was hesitant to single out players to look out for. “I believe all the time that the star of the team is the team itself. So football relies on team cohesion and everyone pulling their weight,” he said. “There are a couple of exciting new players who the fans will make their judgements on. The University of Limpopo (UL) Mens is returning to the Varsity Football tournament with renewed belief and a clear ambition to compete with the country’s best. After missing out on the competition since the 2018 edition, the Limpopo side has spent months preparing for its return and is eager to prove it deserves to be in this season of varsity football tournament. With confidence growing in the camp and strong support from the university community, UL is embracing the challenge ahead. The team’s focus this season is to compete, grow and challenge for the title. While the head coach wants the players to develop from the experience, the squad is determined to fight for every point and make a lasting impression. With new additions strengthening the team, UL believes it has what it takes to compete against the country’s elite. “Our preparations exceeded our expectations because we started with a good number of players and finished without any major injuries. That alone is a bonus going into the tournament,” said head coach Lesetja “Dukes” Laka. Laka explained that the technical team’s biggest focus was preparing the players mentally for the demands of Varsity Football competition. “We have worked very hard to be here, and we believe we deserve to compete on this stage. Our approach is the same in every game we want to be aggressive, intentional and collect maximum points,” he said. Leading the team is captain Reggie Kabelo Masebe, who described the squad as hungry and fully committed to making the most of the opportunity. “All I see in the players is hunger and a willingness to fight for the badge, the fans and the university. With only nine players of the 28 provisional squad members having prior Varsity Football experience, the youthful Durban University of Technology (DUT) team faces a major test of character and resilience as they step onto the national stage for the 2026 Varsity Football edition. These are the sentiments echoed by newly appointed young DUT Head Coach, Andile Mavundla. “Our attitude this season is that whatever we were last year, we want to be better. We have a lot of new faces, and at the same time it’s a lot of young guys. Even so, our main target for this year is to be better,” said Mavundla. Mavundla is no stranger to the Varsity Football competition as well as the culture of the men in black and white of DUT, as the tactician has been involved with DUT Football’s mentorship since their first season of the Varsity Diski campaign back in 2024, including his role as Assistant Coach of the same team last season. For the past seasons since their debut, DUT have had it difficult in the #Iyachesa competitions and with this being their third consecutive appearance in the competition, the KZN side clearly admits that they have another mountain to climb as their first match of this season, against University of Limpopo, fast approaches. “Of course, like any other team, our preparations can never be enough. However, we have done our part and we have no complaints,” he said. “We are going into the first match feeling confident, it will be a test of our resilience.” The men from KwaZulu-Natal will be without their towering strong defender Xolani Mkhonza this year, the important skipper who’s goal against UJ last year earned the KZN team their only point last season after a surprising 1-1 draw in Joburg. Despite departures from the likes of Mkhonza and other key figures, the leadership vacuum is expected to be firmly filled by the exciting rising talent that remains in the team such as shot-stopper, Sekwanele Mtolo, who has since been giving the go-ahead in the captaincy role. After months of intensive preparation, rebuilding and hard work, UWC says is ready to challenge for honours once again and reclaim the trophy they won in 2024. The Cape Town-based side failed to qualify for the tournament last season and didn't get the opportunity to defend their title, but they are back and have spent the past four to five months preparing for the upcoming tournament with the coaching staff focusing on rebuilding the squad following last year's disappointment. Speaking ahead of the competition, the team's coach Lwando Mdleleni said the rebuilding process began at the start of the 2025 season, with the club retaining a core group of experienced players while introducing several younger players to inject fresh energy into the squad. "We had to rebuild the team because last year we were not able to defend our trophy," said Mdleleni. "We managed to retain some of the players and then brought in young blood and fresher faces to add energy to the team." The squad has undergone two training camps as part of its preparations, although injuries have presented a challenge. "We've been struggling with some major injuries. Some of the players are still rebuilding their confidence after undergoing operations," he explained. "Fortunately, the new players coming in will be able to step up when needed." To sharpen the team's match fitness, UWC has also arranged several friendly matches, including a fixture against Stellenbosch FC and another against Hope FC as part of their final preparations. The coach believes the demanding preparation period has laid a solid foundation but says the true test will come once the tournament gets underway. "It has been a gruelling four or five months of preparation for the boys. Hopefully they will be able to showcase what they've been working on. You never really know how well you've prepared until you play your first game,” he adds. He also called on football supporters across Cape Town to rally behind the team. "We encourage Capetonians to come out and support their sons and brothers. We also encourage our communities to get behind the team because UWC is part of the Cape Town community." Having narrowly missed out during critical stages of recent campaigns, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) enters this year’s Varsity Football tournament with renewed energy, high ambitions, and an experienced squad eager to reclaim the crown. UJ’s recent Varsity Football history reflects a proud legacy of excellence, featuring three consecutive final appearances in 2021, 2022, and 2023. After a brief hiatus in 2024, the Orange Army returned with determination last year, advancing to the semi-finals before falling to Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). After a seven-year absence from the competition, Walter Sisulu University Women are ready to make their return to the Varsity Football stage when the 2026 tournament kicks off on 1 August. WSU earned their place back among the country's top university teams following an impressive performance at the USSA Football Championships, marking their first appearance in the competition since 2018. Head coach Buyisile Khunou says qualifying for Varsity Football has given the squad renewed belief while highlighting the continued growth of women's football at the university. "It felt so good and exciting. Qualifying acts as a motivation for the team and is a positive reflection on the university's commitment to women's sport," said Khunou. Preparation for the tournament has centred on more than just technical and tactical work. The coaching staff has placed a strong emphasis on building team unity while ensuring the players are mentally prepared for the challenge ahead. "We've focused on team-building sessions to reduce anxiety while promoting teamwork, discipline and a die-hard attitude," Khunou explained. "It means a lot to the players because of the exposure they will receive, and for the university it reflects the opportunities and development of our women's football programme." On the field, supporters can expect a patient and disciplined approach from the returning side. "Our strategy is simple. We want to play open football with patient build-ups," he said. Round Two of the 2026 Varsity Football Women tournament burst into life at the University of Pretoria on Sunday, producing 20 goals after just three were scored on the opening day. TUT delivered the biggest result with an emphatic 11-1 victory over CPUT, while UJ made it two wins from two after beating hosts UP-Tuks 3-0. Wits secured a 2-1 win over newcomers UL, while defending champions UWC were held to a 1-1 draw by WSU and remain without a victory. CPUT 1-11 TUT TUT took on CPUT looking to redeem themselves following a blunder opening game. The encounter was expected to be one-sided as the six-time champions were gunning for their seventh star. CPUT did the unthinkable, grabbing an early lead from the spot after TUT committed a foul. Sinelisiwe Phumlomo sent the keeper the wrong way inside the first five minutes. Their lead though did not last for long as TUT tied matters immediately. Sibongile Ntoane controlling the attack, she finds Gugu Mabitsela who makes no mistake and guides it home. Andiswa Jele put her side in front for the first time. Brilliant cross delivered and Jele headed in a free header. The Red Army doubled their lead after that through Ntoane for her first of the campaign as she did that from the spot, with the playmaker slotting it home. The affair proved to be one-sided for the majority of the first half as Prof Ntwanano Kubayi's side bagged their fourth on the stroke of halftime to take a comfortable three goal cushion at the interval. The Red Army picked up where they left off, netting seven more goals in the second half. Substitute Tshepang Mosehla opened the second half scoring, slotting it in the corner. Ntoane registered her brace minutes later, opening the goal flood gates. It was Ntoane's show bagging assists and a hat-trick. TUT broke CPUT defence lines with ease, as they went on to net their seventh and Malesa's second. Before completing her hattrick beating the keeper one on one. UP-Tuks was aiming for a first win after holding defending champions to a goalless draw. It was an end-to-end action as expected with Gauteng bragging rights at stake. Tuks came close to getting an opener when S'bahle Ndlovu released Dakarai Zhoya who saw her shot blocked by the keeper in one on one. UJ struck twice in five minutes through Kusaselihle Shibase and Ayanda Mnyembane. Shibase finished off a pinpoint long pass from Kabelo Mokoena before Mnyembane capitalised on a defensive error to double the lead. Tuks posed threatening attacks in search of a goal however their efforts could not materialise as UJ took a two-goal cushion at half time break. The second stanza produced a more technically disciplined display with UJ guarding their lines and absorbing the pressure. Tuks committed more numbers upfront in a desperate search for a goal. UJ sealed the victory with a clinical counterattack as Mnyembane set up Kusaselihle Shibase for her second goal of the match. Desperate to defend their sole lead, UL suffered a blow as they were reduced to 10 players when Mmamonyana Selloe was sent off. Wits pierced through UL defence finding Qoba who perfectly fed Imaan Parker who easily tapped in the equalizer. UWC kept asking questions and captain Tiffany Kortjie stepped up to the task and netted a goal that was later denied for an offside. WSU held it tied at the back, heading to the break deadlocked at 0-0. The second half produced all the goals with WSU breaking the deadlock. With their sole promising attack WSU were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box as Lilita Mweli opened her account with a looping shot in the far corner. Chasing an equaliser, UWC pushed captain Kortjie further forward, but WSU goalkeeper produced a series of crucial saves to preserve her side's advantage. The defending champions did not back down and were finally awarded for their efforts. Kortjie connected well with a throughball and perfectly placed it in the far post to level things. The 2026 Varsity Football Women's tournament kicked off on Saturday at the University of Pretoria and the opening day produced closely contested encounters as WSU and Wits played to a 1-1 draw, while newcomers UL marked their return with a goalless draw against CPUT. The UJ Orange Army were the only side to claim maximum points after edging TUT 1-0 in a repeat of last year’s semi-final, while hosts UP-Tuks were held to a 0-0 draw by defending champions UWC in the day's marquee clash. WSU 1-1 Wits Wits and WSU played out an entertaining 1-1 draw to kick off the 2026 FNB Varsity Football Women's tournament. With both teams eager to make an early statement in the competition, the opening fixture lived up to expectations as they produced an exciting and competitive contest. Neither side was willing to give an inch, showcasing attacking intent and defensive resilience throughout the match before ultimately settling for a share of the spoils in a fitting curtain-raiser to the new season. Wits and WSU share spoils in a thrilling encounter. WSU and Wits kicked off actions of the 2026 FNB Varsity Football Women. With much expected from the sides to prove their competitiveness, the fixture did not disappoint. Wits enjoyed possession in the opening minutes, but it was difficult for the Johannesburg outfit to deal with WSU counter attack breaks. Buyisile Khunou's side opened the score sheet with a brilliant finish from Okuhle Mrulwa. Sloppy at the back, Wits failed to clear their lines which saw Mrulwa slotting it in the wide post. Wits kept asking questions with the East London side staying organised at the back, which did not last long as Wits finally equalised courtesy of Thina Nogcantsi's strike. Wits were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, WSU shot stopper Likona Ngewu failed to gather Aliyaah Allie's shot, the ball fell on the sharp boot of Thina Nogcantsi who slotted it in the bottom corner. Wits came close to taking the lead with Mmathapelo Tau's shot cancelled for an offside. Level at the break, WSU 1-1 Wits The second half delivered no goals however both teams threw everything they had at each other. Wits came back guns blazing and kept asking questions while WSU remained calm at the back. WSU came close reclaiming the lead through Nintu Jele, who saw her shot going over the post one-one with the keeper. Wits piled pressure on WSU with signs of cracking their defence however Nogcantsi could not convert two clear-cut chances. CPUT broke a couple of times in a counter however they did not pose much threat on the Turfloop side. Level at the interval, UL 0-0 CPUT The clash saw a slow start in the second half with both teams not asking questions. UL was the first to take the game to CPUT. UL made promising attacks inside the CPUT half, exploiting the wide areas thanks to Welcome Maphanga's pleasing deliveries, however the Limpopo outfit could not capitalize on crosses fed in the box. It was a battle of midfielders with Zilungile Mathiya orchestrating the middle of the park for CPUT, although they spent much of the second stanza in their own half. The Cape side broke on a couple occasions with no results as well. TUT tormented UJ in early stages with relentless attacks aiming to get an early lead. Nthabeleng Modiko led UJ remained composed in defence as they absorbed the pressure for most the half. TUT's front trio of Mokgaetji Ramanna, Sibongile Ntoane and Nombuso Malesa posed threats at UJ defence, piercing the lines a couple of times, however nothing materialized for the Red Army. UJ had their fair chances of stealing the lead, as they started finding their feed late in the half. Malitsatsi Mosala could not convert the aerial deliveries in the box as it was still goalless at the break. TUT continued their hunt for the opener while UJ remained composed at the back. The Pretoria West outfit came agonizing close to score twice in successive occasions. Nombuso Malesa's header went wide after a lethal delivery before Sibongile Ntoane unleashed a cracker only for her to be denied by the crossbar. Despite UWC entering the match as favourites in search of a fourth consecutive title, Tuks produced a disciplined performance to earn a valuable point. The opening exchanges saw UWC pressing the Stripe Generation to go ahead early. Vulindlela Biko's troops controlled the tempo in the opening half, coming close to finding the back of the net a couple of occasions. Tuks did not give UWC too much respect, as they hauled their attacks, firing two close attempts. In an end-to-end stanza UWC were almost awarded a goal. Chelsea Daniels unleashed a cracker in the box which went through Akani Maluleke but to the rescue was Zikhona Mgotywa who cleared it off the line. The Western Cape outfit kept asking for more but met an unshaken Tuks defence. Goalless at the break. The second half saw a balanced tempo with sides starting slow. UWC broke Tuks defence line but the Pretoria side was up to the task. Tuks suffered two injury blows in attack and defence losing Zikhona Mgotywa in the first half and Aphelele Mhlongo early in the second half. UWC looked a better side to take the lead however Tuks remained solid at the back. Tuks looked threatening on the wide areas, as they saw their efforts blocked twice from corner kicks. The Tuks Stripe Generation embark on another quest to capture their maiden Varsity Football Women's title, with newly appointed head coach Sibusiso Themba leading the charge. The former Moroka Swallows midfielder is no stranger to the Tuks setup, having previously served as assistant coach under Maude Khumalo, and now steps into the top role determined to guide the side to long-awaited Varsity Football glory. The former Tuks player aims to perform better than season and lead the Pretoria outfit to a silverware. “Last season didn't meet the standards expected of Tuks, we have used that as motivation to come back stronger. The University of the Western Cape head into this year's Varsity Football Women's tournament as defending champions, but are determined to build on the progress made in recent seasons, despite changes to the technical team. New head coach Vulindlela Biko has set clear objectives for the campaign: remain competitive throughout the tournament, continue the team's upward trajectory and ensure UWC delivers strong performances in every match. With pre-season preparations now complete, Biko is confident his side is ready for the challenge. "Our preparations have gone well, with the players showing great commitment throughout our pre-season programme," he said. "The hard work has been done and now our focus shifts to performing when it matters most." UWC enters the tournament following significant changes on the coaching bench. Long-serving head coach Thina Mbuli has joined the national women's team, Banyana Banyana, while assistant coach Msekeli Mvalo has taken up a new role at Tuks. Although the departures mark the end of an important chapter for the programme, Biko believes the squad has embraced the transition and is prepared to write its own success story. "The departure of assistant coach Msekeli Mvalo is significant, but we have confidence in the remaining members of the technical team and the leadership within the squad to ensure continuity," he said.
