Log leaders UJ ready to repeat 2021 glory against defending champs UFS

When UJ face UFS Kovsies in Varsity Football, it is more than just a tactical battle. Over the past five years, the fixture has grown into one of the tournament’s fiercest rivalries, defined by title battles, revenge and memorable clashes.

The rivalry peaked in the 2021 bubble final at Tuks Stadium. After Kovsies had beaten UJ 1-0 in the group stage, they entered their first Varsity Football final with confidence. UJ, however, saved their best for the biggest stage.

In a masterclass of attacking football, UJ dismantled the Bloemfontein outfit in a 4-1 thriller. First-half goals from Nkosinathi Sibiya, Tristan Nikitaridis, and a long-range strike from Thulani Zandamela put UJ 3-0 ahead before halftime.

Though UFS pulled one back in the second half through Thandolwethu Khoza, Pogiso Mabote sealed UJ’s maiden Varsity Football title in stoppage time, establishing a benchmark of dominance in the fixture.

The years that followed transformed this matchup into a captivating tug-of-war between two distinct footballing philosophies: UJ’s heavy-metal, high-pressing style carried them into three consecutive finals (crowned champions in 2021 and finishes as runners-up in 2022 and 2023). During this stretch, UJ frequently held the psychological edge over UFS in decisive encounters.

While UJ endured a brief 2024 hiatus from the tournament after missing qualification in late 2023, UFS rebuilt their squad into a battle-tested unit. Kovsies captured the Varsity Football championship in 2024, proving their mettle under pressure and setting up an explosive reunion when UJ returned to the topflight.

With UJ back in Varsity Football for the 2025 and 2026 campaigns, their rivalry with UFS remains intense.

From group-stage battles at Shimla Park to clashes at UJ Soweto Stadium, these fixtures are often decided by fine margins.

Both teams continue to produce PSL-bound talent and showcase tactical innovation. The rivalry remains wide open ahead of Friday’s clash at UJ Soweto Stadium.
