UJ still unbeaten while Wits hold Maties to a draw in Varsity Netball round 5

UJ occupies the top spot on the log after beating UFS Kovsies in round 5 of Varsity Netball 2026 at the Wits Sports Hall in Johannesburg. Defending champions NWU Eagles scored an easy victory over newcomers CUT while UP-Tuks didn’t have too much trouble against Madibaz. Wits and Maties shared the spoils in the opening match.

WITS 47 – 47 MATIES

Despite the chilly and rainy weather in Johannesburg, the crowd filled the Wits Sports Hall for the clash between Wits and Maties.

The game started with great physicality and high intensity. The hosts dominated the first five minutes, but a relentless defensive effort saw Maties fight back to level matters and end the first quarter 11-11.

In the second 15 minutes, both teams picked up where they left off in a fierce, goal-for-goal tussle. Both sides tried to dominate the midcourt, disrupting each other's rhythm and forcing errors. Wits' defence won massive turnovers in the circle, but poor transitional play allowed Maties to equalise, making it 20-20 at halftime.

The home side returned after the break and put up yet another incredible defensive showing in the third quarter. The Maroon Machine had enough entry into the goal circle during the first power play but missed shots and passing errors cost them. Wits finished the quarter with 90% shooting accuracy and edged their noses in front with a score of 33-31.

In the final 15 minutes, it seemed Maties did enough to collect the victory, taking a five-goal lead during the second power play. But Wits' relentless pressure saw them come back strongly and force a 47-47 draw.

UJ 50 – 40 UFS KOVSIES

In the much-anticipated clash between log leaders UJ and five-times champions UFS Kovsies, it was the Johannesburg-based team that came out on top 50-40 to remain the only unbeaten team in this year’s competition.

UJ started on the front foot and dictated play at every level, finishing the first quarter with a comfortable 12-7 lead. It was an intense opening from both sides, with the UJ defensive line working tirelessly to deny Kovsies clean entries into the goal third.

The Orange Army delivered a tactical masterclass in defensive pressure and clinical shooting in the second quarter to extend their lead to 25-17 at half-time. The in-form Cornelia Mupenda (player of the match) applied much pressure on Kovsies’ goal shooter Mari Duraan who was substituted.

Kovsies came with a massive surge in the third quarter, digging deep and producing incredible interceptions in the midcourt to claw their way back into the contest. But despite the effort, UJ managed to protect their lead, with the scoreboard reading 35-30.

The final 15 minutes saw rock-solid baseline defence from UJ. Creating an impenetrable barrier that Kovsies simply couldn't break, the Orange Army walked away with a 50-40 victory.

CUT 37 – 60 NWU EAGLES

Defending champions NWU Eagles registered a resounding 60-37 victory over newcomers CUT side after controlling the encounter from start to finish.

While the Eagles managed to edge ahead early on, CUT refused to back down. They matched their opponents' intensity and kept themselves within striking distance, 7-13, at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter, however, saw the defending champions starting to pull away. Capitalising heavily on their height advantage in the circle, the North West side began turning over possession and ruthlessly converting those opportunities into points. Outscoring their opponents significantly in the second period, the Eagles headed into the half-time break 27-15 in the lead.

Determined to claw their way back into the contest, CUT utilised the first power play of the match in the third quarter. However, the tactical move was swiftly neutralised by the Eagles' clinical shooters and a superb defensive display. NWU’s relentless pressure across the court began to tell as the gap widened to 49-22.

The final 15 minutes were a professional display of game management by the Eagles. Though CUT fought valiantly until the final whistle, the Eagles' pressure and clinical execution never wavered and they secured a definitive 60-37 win. NWU defender Christi-Mari Coetzee claimed her second player of the match accolade in this year’s competition.

MADIBAZ 39 – 62 UP-TUKS

UP-Tuks secured a dominant 62-39 victory over Madibaz, leaving the Gqeberha-based side still searching for their first win in 2026.

Tuks built early scoreboard pressure, capitalising on their opponent’s sluggish start to lead 14-8 after the first quarter. Madibaz attempted to stay in touch through goal shooter Bronwyn Ann Goosen, who converted every single attempt once she found her rhythm.

In the second quarter, it was another slow start by Madibaz that allowed the Stripe Generation to dominate. Tuks called for their power play, scoring six critical goals during the double-pointer window through the accurate shooting of Kamogelo Maseko. They stretched their lead to 33-19 at half-time.

Tuks’ dominance continued into the third quarter with the team extending their cushion to 50-32. Their ruthless defending completely neutralised Madibaz's power play, denying them any extra points.

Both teams pushed hard in a high-intensity final 15 minutes, but the Pretoria team’s superior experience showed as they sealed a comprehensive 62-39 victory.
