  • 'We have to step up' says new DUT coach as Varsity Football 2025 kicks off

It’s no secret that KwaZulu-Natal teams have struggled in Varsity Football competitions. However, the new DUT head coach, Zipho Dlangalala, believes this trend isn’t limited to Varsity Football alone but reflects a broader issue affecting all levels of football in South Africa. “The challenges we have, we need to acknowledge. Everyone has their own challenges, so I will assume that just like the previous times there might have been challenges, we will have our own challenges as well,” said Dlangalala. “This could be KZN, but also in other competitions at all levels as well and not just in the varsity teams. So, we are carrying quite a big load because of the history of KZN teams in Varsity Football. We carry a big load to say that we are better than that. “We are clear that we have to step up and really show up. We don’t have a choice in that regard.”   With a great deal of experience in the country’s development team at national level, the former Maritzburg United coach and Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Dlangalala believes that his side have a point to build from, which is last season’s participation in the Varsity Football competition. “I would like to believe that 2025 is a season where we are looking to reverse last situations, not because the other teams were bad or that we are better than them, but because we have taken lessons from them,” he said. “It’s a huge achievement that we are back. We are not starting from scratch all over again, we are starting from the experience that we gained last year.” As the sole representatives of KZN, DUT will be using the iconic Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg as their home ground this season. According to Dlangalala, this is a major boost for the team, especially after going without any home games last season. “We want to make maximum use of that, we should benefit from playing in Pietermaritzburg, midlands, which is one of our campuses as the main campus is in Durban.” “We want to get support from all DUT campuses, but even from other institutions in Pietermaritzburg like UKZN, Mgungundlovu FET, and others including the general public. We will appreciate if  everyone comes” he concluded.   DUT Provisional Squad: Nduduzo Zondi, Sibonginhlanhla Hlatshwayo, Lungelo Pillay, Xolani Mkhonza, Kwanele Vilakazi, Khwezi Dlamini, Manqoba Shange, Khulekani Nxumalo, Bonga Mhembu, Phiwayinkosi Mchunu, Iviwe Sodidi, Sbonelo Ngidi, Nkosibanathi Dlamini, Olwethu Ngidi, Nduli Ntando, Ayanda Kunene, Thalente Khize, Phakamile Mbona, Manqoba Mlele, Samkelo Zulu, Sekwanele Mtolo, Mluleki Mdunge, Luthando Buthelezi, Lindelwa Dlamini, Simangaliso Delwa, Fanelesimbonge Ndwandwe, Sifundo Ngema, Nkululeko Nkosi, Thobani Jwara, Khali Ndumiso, Luyanda Ntuli.   Full Fixtures:   HERE   Tickets:   HERE.

  • Fresh talent to ignite UJ's Varsity Football 2025 campaign

After missing out on the 2024 season, the University of Johannesburg returns with a renewed sense of purpose, as a new generation of young players prepares to make their mark alongside experienced veterans. The Orange Army were crowned USSA champions and are set to make a much anticipated return to Varsity Football this year and unleash a wave of fresh talent. “UJ is bringing a young team to the Varsity Football tournament this year. The 2024 break has brought the change we have new faces who bring fresh energy and are hungry for success,” says Head Coach, Karabo Mogudi. “The youngest players are 19 years old, doing their first and second years of study at UJ.” These players are no strangers to competitive football. They’ve already sharpened their skills in the demanding 2024/25 Gauteng ABC Motsepe League and made their mark in previous Engen Knockout Challenges as part of the UJ Men’s Second Team. Their integration into the senior squad will be closely watched, as UJ has a rich history of producing top-tier talent. One notable change sees young Lungelo Sithole stepping into the big shoes of goalkeeper Richard Banga Lona, who departs after two impressive Varsity Football seasons. Sithole’s abilities came to the fore in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League, where he stepped up impressively in place of the injured Banga Lona. His standout performances earned him a spot among the Top 10 goalkeepers of the 2024/25 season, with an impressive 10 clean sheets in just 13 matches. The fearless defensive midfielder, Ndabezinhle “Juice” Nkosi, will lead the young UJ team in this year’s Varsity Football campaign. UJ's recent Varsity Football history is nothing short of spectacular. They clinched the 2021 Varsity Football tournament, displaying remarkable resilience in the "bubble games" at the University of Pretoria following the COVID-19 pandemic. Coach Mogudi added that the fans will be in for a treat. “The UJ Community is a trusted ally. I know that the Soweto Stadium will be full to capacity during our home games. The current demand for match tickets shows that the Orange Wave is anticipating this varsity showdown. We will not disappoint them – the Orange Army is going to put on a show this this tournament,” he says. The Orange Army will kick off their campaign on home soil in Soweto at 5:00 PM against last year's finalists NWU.   UJ Provisional Squad: Lungelo Sithole, Karabo Modisane, Serero Mamatela, Njabulo Jele, Nhlanhla Sangweni, Sinenhlanhla Mkhonza, Keletso Sekhwela, Sanele Mncube, Sandile Nkosi, Bayanda Mkhonza, Phadishi Kaka, Kamogelo Mogagabe, Ndabezinhle Nkosi, Bhekimusi Nhlapho, Thabo Moshikere, Naphtally Mokoena, Bonolo Magoro, Ngwako Ramaloko, Mxolisi Msibi, Tumelo Machete, Yasidu Lifa, Tshepo Mosieleng, Kyle van Rensburg, Koketso Mathidza, Mthunzi Duze, Keabetswe Segaetsho, Reotshepile Makokwe, Tokoloho Vilakazi, Teboho Makhalanyane, Itumeleng Letwaba, Tshepang Ramafoko, Nhlanhla Vilakazi, Sarfaraz Moosa. Wits is confident and optimistic about making a strong comeback in the highly anticipated Varsity Football 2025 tournament, determined to leave a lasting impression after a lengthy absence. Under the leadership of captain Kwadi Molepo, a pivotal figure in the squad, the team enters the tournament with a balanced lineup and clear ambitions for a deep run. With defending champions UWC not participating in this year’s edition, the Joburg side sees a golden opportunity to pursue their ambitions and achieve their objectives. "We want to use the opportunity to reconnect with the tournament and use the platform for athletes to do their best. We're full of pride, and we're excited to represent the university." said head coach Thanduxolo Zulu. Their focus is on winning the opening game to build momentum for the matches ahead, as they don’t see any team as greater opposition. They also aim to reconnect with the tournament and provide a platform for players to showcase their talent on a bigger stage, backed by the unwavering support of their fans. "We've been training every day at a good high level. We take whatever comes with a competition as a privilege,” added Zulu. “We all competed in USSA Championships to qualify, no one did us a favour, so every team is big. For us, the most important game is the first game. We'll take one game at a time." Having last reached the final in 2018, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to TUT, the Joburg side is back with pride and excitement, eager to inspire their campus, fans, and local community. Their opening game is on Thursday 7 August at 18:30 at Wits Stadium against CUT. With intentions of being competitive, building the best team possible, and playing with unity and fun. • CUT fine-tune against PSL clubs ahead of Varsity Football 2025

CUT are upbeat and confident as the countdown to the Varsity Football 2025 continues, with the eagerly anticipated competition kicking off on August 7. CUT have sharpened their skills in two warm-up matches against Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs, Marumo Gallants and Siwelele FC, in Bloemfontein - and it doesn’t get much better than preparing against full professional teams in the top-flight of South African domestic football. Having two PSL teams competing in the city this season also serves as motivation, as the players are well aware that club scouts and representatives do attend and watch the games. A major positive - and a key difference for CUT this season is that the players have also been putting in the hard work academically. As a result, they have a broader squad to select from, with more players earning the necessary academic credits to be eligible for the football field as well. CUT coach Patric Malokase, who is heading into his second season in charge, says both he and the players learnt a great deal last year, and he’s confident a much-improved team will take to the field this time around. “It’s going to be a different CUT this year,” said Malokase. “This is a CUT team that’s hungry, a CUT team that’s competitive. If people are expecting the CUT from last season, they’re in for a big surprise." “We love the way the players are gelling and the support we’re getting from management especially from our Vice-Chancellor." “We’re looking good, and we just want to encourage our supporters, fellow students, and colleagues at the university to keep backing us like they’ve been doing — it really means a lot to us.” CUT will be on the road in round one, travelling to Johannesburg to face Wits. That match is scheduled to kick-off at 18:30 on Thursday, 7 August, at the Wits Stadium.   CUT Provisional Squad: Kananelo Sehebeng, Thabang Mokoena, Alwande Sibiya, Nkosigiphile Xolane Lubisi, Mokhele Letsoara, Pogisho Dikole, Mpho Paul Ntabi, Tiisetso Mpholoana, Katlego Ramotete, Mzwakhe Shabalala, Oratile Mothibibedi, Malefetsane Matale, Boeletsane Rankadi, Keletso Khumalo, Tlhobo Thejane, Polokeho Letlema, Siyabonga Mzelem, Tshepo Lekoro, Thabo Phumo Lehakwe, Khotso Mphene, Moeletsi Khumalo, Seseko Faku, Dlamini Nduduza, Pikilane Tshabalala, Lunga Mthoonya, James Sethole, Cebisa Thembelani Zikalala, Tumelo Neo Mofokeng, Thabang Litabe, Tlotlego Pitsonyane, Yanga Black.   Full Fixtures:   HERE   Tickets:   HERE.

  • NWU gears up for Varsity Football 2025 with core squad and renewed focus

As the Varsity Football 2025 tournament approaches on August 7, the NWU Eagles team stands ready both mentally and physically for another challenging season. Head coach, Nkululeko Malgas, says the team is entering the season with a solid foundation and the benefit of experience. “They are in the right mental space, having retained almost 70% of those players. They know exactly what is at stake,” he says. As part of their preparations, the team competed in the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Football Club Championships, where they reached the quarterfinals. “I think we did well play USSA Football Club Champs and losing in the quarterfinals against UP Tuks on penalties,” says Malgas. “We came back to host the North West USSA Inter-Varsity Cup, and by winning it, that served as a good morale booster. But nothing comes closer to Varsity Football because you can’t rehearse that crowd atmosphere and Varsity Football fever buzz.” NWU finished as runners-up in the 2024 tournament, and Malgas believes last years’ experience has shaped the team’s approach for the new season. “We treated each game as if it was a final. It will be more difficult this year with a complete Gauteng big four, Wits, UJ, TUT, and UP Tuks, as we welcome back UJ and Wits.” When asked about standout players to watch this season, Malgas emphasised the team’s unity over individual brilliance. “It’s very difficult to single out any particular player, as we believe in collective effort.” With the return of strong competition and the high expectations that follow last year’s campaign, NWU will be looking to build on their consistency and cohesion as they aim to go one step further in 2025.   NWU Provisional Squad   Goalkeepers:  Ethan Mokwena, Lesego Matemane.   Defenders:  Mlamleli Kokela, Lucas Seromo, Mpho Mokoena, Lucky Letwaba, Aphelele Sibisi, Resego Kukama.   Midfielders:  Bokamoso Ramoshoane, Thapelo Letsholonyane, Pascual Tivane, Itumeleng Selemela, Momelezi Mngati, Siphesihle Mahlangu, Khumoetsile van Schalkwyk, Smanga Twala, Ranonyane Mmutlane, Xolani Masethi.   Strikers:  Keorapetse Galehose, Reatlegile Kgosithebe, Molemo Kukama, Ditlhobolo Oatlhotse, Knowledge Muleya, Thabang Majoro, Sousa Mathe.   Full Fixtures:   HERE   Tickets:   HERE.   By: Phenyo Mokgothu

  • Varsity Football 2025 set to ignite campuses nationwide

South Africa’s premier university football tournament returns this August, with Varsity Football 2025 kicking off on 7 August and running through to 2 October. Fans can expect a high-energy, talent-packed competition featuring the country’s top student-athletes and rising football stars. This year brings a fresh twist, with Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosting for the first time, adding new flavour to the tournament's long-standing tradition. UJ and Wits both make a return to the competition after missing out last year. All men's matches will be played on Thursdays, with live broadcasts on SuperSport and additional coverage via live-stream on the SuperSport Schools App . Siya Noqayi , Varsity Football Code Manager, shares his thoughts on the evolution of the tournament: "As we prepare for another exciting season of Varsity Football, we are really proud of how far the tournament has come. It’s become more than just a competition, it’s a platform that changes lives. The rise of the women’s game especially shows the talent and determination of our student-athletes, and we’re committed to building on that momentum. Whether it’s the men’s or women’s tournament, Varsity Football is about creating real opportunities and celebrating the impact sport can have both on and off the field.” The 2025 men’s tournament features UJ, NWU-Mahikeng, UP-Tuks, UFS, Wits, CUT, DUT and TUT, competing across seven rounds from 7 August with the semi-finals taking place on 25 September and the final showdown set for 2 October. 2024 champions UWC failed to qualify for the upcoming season leaving the door open for a new champion to be crowned and last year’s runners up NWU will no doubt be looking to go one step further and claim the title. NWU Mahikeng head coach Nkululeko Malgas is well aware of the expectations his team is facing: “As the previous editions runners-up, we are expected to go all the way again. We, unfortunately, have to live up to that expectation. We have brought back hope to our supporters, and we have no choice but to deliver a gold medal this time around. And you have seen how electrifying our supporters are. As our slogan goes 'Noble by birth'.” This year’s competition also sees the return of Joburg footballing giants UJ and Wits. The Orange Army won the USSA 2024 tournament and will be celebrating their institutions 20 th  anniversary with head coach Karabo Mogudi looking forward to the challenge: “We are happy to be back in the Varsity Football tournament in 2025. It felt strange to not participate in the previous year. This shows how difficult it is to qualify for this tournament than the tournament itself. It is an honour and privilege to be back representing UJ in its 20th year of celebration.”   Mogudi is adamant that UJ will be competitive as usual while trying to win this edition, but they are under no illusion that it will be easy. “Being a USSA Champions puts a target on your back but we've been in these situations before and we shall ensure that the target is constantly moving for the better. UJ Football has always been built around the values of a team. There are many promising young footballers in the team and the tournament will reveal their real character.” The women’s competition will take place from 5 to 19 September, with all matches hosted at UJ. UWC, reigning champions after a 2–1 victory over TUT in the 2024 final, are back to defend their title and will be looking to make it 3 in a row. Fans can once again look forward to the #IyachesaFAN Challenge, live matchday activations, and on-campus experiences. • Varsity Esports – Player Spotlight on Alfon

The excitement of the very first Varsity Esports split is in full swing, and we’re diving deeper into the players who make it all happen! In this debut edition, we caught up with Alfon, the King of Swing, from the University of Pretoria. Alfon thrives in the high-pressure role of Duelist in Valorant, mastering the art of precision aiming and swift execution. As an expert in "pointing and clicking on heads", they excel at securing key eliminations and creating space for his team. Beyond raw mechanical skill, Alfon also serves as the team’s In-Game Leader, orchestrating plays and making critical strategic calls. He takes on the responsibility of determining the approach, leading the charge as the entry fragger, and adapting instantly when plans go awry. Quick and effective communication is his weapon when things take an unexpected turn, ensuring the team is always aligned and ready to adjust. Alfon is showcasing his skills in the Varsity Esports Valorant tournament, and we had the chance to ask him a few questions. Let’s get to know him a little better! *Please note that answers have been edited for length and clarity. What’s your motivation for competing in Varsity Esports? Ever since I was about 7 it's been a competition for me – from beating my mates in Lego Star Wars by collecting the most studs to being top fragger on the leaderboard in CS and R6 and now Valorant. I found casual gaming didn't give me the adrenaline rush I was seeking anymore so I pursued competitive gaming. I've never looked back. What is your experience in Esports in South Africa? Started off as the captain for the Apex team as I was previously the captain of VYBN Esports. However, the game slowly started to feel unplayable for me so I picked up Valorant. Joining the team was a breeze, everyone is very friendly and overall have been invitingly eager to learn from each other. We lost our original captain as he passed away, but the team didn't disband instead we found another reason to keep pushing harder. What is your preferred playstyle? I like to be aggressive with my plays but not what my captain would call "stupid". By this I mean that when I want to take an opportunity. This being swinging an angle or even rushing site, I won't be doing it with what we call "dry peeking" I will inform my team of what I'm doing and use certain abilities to give myself more of an advantage in the fight I'm taking. I believe speed is the key to winning most gun fights, a stun or blind gives you those few seconds of opportunity and being aggressive takes the initiative in winning these fights’ Is there anyone you are looking out for in this tournament? Maties, TwoFace is a beamer. How do you prepare for a big match? Before every game I need to clean the mousepad and the mouse – not a deep clean but more of a wipe down. The smallest bump could throw me off. Aimlabs is also a must, I will usually play 30 minutes of Aimlabs then hop in the range just to make sure I'm feeling warm and crisp. What are your goals for the tournament? Other than the obvious statement of winning, we want to grow as a team to be able to take on any gaming series not just university level but hopefully one day global level.
