Wits is confident and optimistic about making a strong comeback in the highly anticipated Varsity Football 2025 tournament, determined to leave a lasting impression after a lengthy absence.
Under the leadership of captain Kwadi Molepo, a pivotal figure in the squad, the team enters the tournament with a balanced lineup and clear ambitions for a deep run.

With defending champions UWC not participating in this year’s edition, the Joburg side sees a golden opportunity to pursue their ambitions and achieve their objectives.
"We want to use the opportunity to reconnect with the tournament and use the platform for athletes to do their best. We're full of pride, and we're excited to represent the university." said head coach Thanduxolo Zulu.
Their focus is on winning the opening game to build momentum for the matches ahead, as they don’t see any team as greater opposition. They also aim to reconnect with the tournament and provide a platform for players to showcase their talent on a bigger stage, backed by the unwavering support of their fans.
"We've been training every day at a good high level. We take whatever comes with a competition as a privilege,” added Zulu.
“We all competed in USSA Championships to qualify, no one did us a favour, so every team is big. For us, the most important game is the first game. We'll take one game at a time."
Having last reached the final in 2018, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to TUT, the Joburg side is back with pride and excitement, eager to inspire their campus, fans, and local community.
Their opening game is on Thursday 7 August at 18:30 at Wits Stadium against CUT. With intentions of being competitive, building the best team possible, and playing with unity and fun.
"Our focus is on the first game and then we'll take it one game at a time. The derby will bring a nice vibe because we're neighbors, but everything else will be settled on the pitch. Wits will prioritize collecting points in their first two games, but the derby is expected to be an exciting match for fans and the community."
