With the 2025 edition of Varsity Football set to ignite campuses around SA from 7 August we take a look back at how last year's tournament unfolded in dramatic fashion, which players brought the heat and which teams delivered outstanding performances.

Defending champions TUT kicked off their campaign with a draw against UWC, but the performance of the night came from UFS who stunned NWU with a 3-1 away win in Bloem. Obakeng Seekoei scored the season’s opener while Boy Rantsoti bagged a brace.

Drama unfolded in round 2 as VUT stunned defending champions TUT with a 4-0 shutout while UFS picked up back-to-back wins. Omphemetse Athibeng drilling the winner into the top of the net.

A 2-2 thriller in Bloem was the highlight of round 3 as VUT drew against CUT with Sibusiso Baloyi scoring a banger from the edge of the box. UWC picked up an upset against the Red Army in Cape Town and Tuks went top of the log.

Tuks continued to impress on their return to the tournament remaining top of the log after beating the in-form UFS Blues. Defending champs TUT’s poor start to the season continued as they lost to NWU while UWC and VUT both scored 4 goals. Kgahlisho Kgomoeswana scored a brace for the MaVUTi including one of the goals of the tournament versus 3 defenders.

In round 5  UWC emerged as title contenders after toppling Tuks to take top spot on the log while TUT’s woes continues as they were held to a draw by DUT. The Red Army without a win after five rounds. Highlight of the night belonged to UWC skipper Damian Overmeyer who bagged one of the season’s top goals with his free kick.

In round 6 UFS humbled log leaders UWC in Cape Town while defending champs TUT finally got their first win. NWU raised their hands as contenders with the Eagles scoring a beautifully executed textbook goal against VUT.

The final matches of the round robin stages saw Tuks, NWU, UFS and UWC advance to the semi-finals. UWC crushed the MaVUTi while the Eagles once again displayed excellent footie with Reatlegile Kgosithebe putting the finishing touch on a great team effort.

Drama in the business end of the tournament saw 4th place on the log UWC topple log leaders Tuks in the first semi-final while red hot NWU emerged as tournament favourites after crushing UFS 4-0. Lucky Letwaba scoring one of the goals of the tournament from a free kick.

The 2024 season concluded with a dramatic final that saw UWC clinch the title against favourites NWU after the Cape side won 8-7 in a penalty shootout when the game ended 1-1 after regulation time.

NWU’s Reatlegile Kgosithebe was voted as the overall FNB Player Of The Tournament after a brilliant season for the Eagles while UWC talisman Leandro De Sousa picked up the Suzuki Golden Boot award for netting 6 goals as the seasons top scorer. UFS shotstopper Tisetso Seodinyane won the Cashbuild Golden Glove award for his outstanding efforts in goal.

The 2025 season kicks-off on 7 August and a new champion will be crowned after 2024 victors UWC failed to qualify at the USSA tournament. This year’s edition also sees the return of UJ and Wits who replace UWC and VUT.  We can’t wait to see which team will lift the trophy this year and which players will emerge as the tournament's top stars.
