- Road to the semi-finals: Tuks vs Maties
UP-Tuks are heading into Monday’s semi-final clash against defending champions Maties as the only unbeaten team in the 2023 Varsity Netball competition. The match will start at 19:00 at the Rembrandt Hall at Tuks in Pretoria. While Tuks are riding high, the Maroon Machine suffered losses against UJ (32-35), NWU (40-50) and a massive 38-60 defeat against their semi-final opponents. Following appearances in three previous finals, last year it was fourth time lucky for Maties when they beat NWU in the final to claim their first Varsity Netball title. Tuks were champions in 2017 and 2019. Tuks coach Jenny van Dyk says at the end of the day, the semi-finals and the final are all that counts. “Our performances up to date carry weight in the sense that it gives us the home ground advantage. The success will lie in executing the same thing to the same standard that we’ve done in the past couple of weeks. “Playing Maties in the semis at Tuks is going to be one of the highlights of the season. They carry with them the title of the defending champions and obviously, that’s the red flag, if I can put it that way. “For us, we’ve got nothing to lose and we know what we are working towards and this is just the first step of many more exciting things to come in the future. There is a lot of work to do this week, a lot of areas we need to fine-tune in keeping the squad fresh and giving them the right type of stimulus to move forward.” Maties coach Zanele Mdodana says she’s always a firm believer that the tournament starts when you get to the semis. “It’s going to be interesting to play at Tuks, obviously we are up against the crowd, they’ve got the home-ground advantage. But it’s not unfamiliar territory for us, we’ve been in that position before. “We are just looking forward to a good game, putting our best foot forward and sort of reinventing ourselves. Coming out with a strong start, that’s going to be very important for us and making sure that we stay in the game until the very end.” Fixtures HERE. Tickets HERE.

And they started on the right foot when central midfielder Damian Overmeyer broke the deadlock in the 29th minute scoring from a UWC set piece just outside the VUT box on the right side. UWC continued to showcase good quality football and despite the halftime score of 1-0, VUT didn’t sit back feeling sorry for themselves. Shortly after returning to the field for the second half, the visitors shocked the home side when Ntokozo Mgidi scored a fast goal to make it 1-1. Mdleleni's side was not done however as they managed to score two quick goals through Riyaaz Koopstadt and Leandro de Sousa to give UWC a comfortable lead. In the first few minutes of the game, both teams were aggressive, throwing everything they had at each other. They were playing a passing game and hunting for open spaces. The number of yellow cards issued early in the game demonstrated the intensity of the game. NWU’s Reatlegile Kgosithebe goal scored from a tap-in with a quality cross from Heaven Sereetsi, gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at the halftime break. Early in the second half, UFH set the tone by moving the ball fast to reach their striker Sinobom Kapase. The visitors attempted to slow the game down to break UFH's momentum, but the home team was unbeatable at that moment. Kapase, who unleashed a cracker in the box to find the back of the net 15 minutes into the second half, scored for the home team. Reatlegile scored his second goal of the match, showing power as he made a terrific turn in between two UFH defenders and put the ball into the back of the net, to secure the victory. UFS 4-1 CUT UFS saved their best for last with a 4-1 win over city rivals CUT at Shimla Park. With NWU and UWC winning earlier in the day, UFS’ chances of reaching the semi-finals for the third straight year were dashed, but this didn’t stop them from playing a high-intensity game. In typical derby fashion, it was end-to-end stuff by both teams, especially going into the game knowing that it was nothing more than a dead rubber and the only real prize on offer was the bragging rights. The scoring was opened in the 10th minute with Sambulo Sithole, steering a rebound into the back of the net. The joy was short-lived as a lap in concentration saw Lesego Mafikeng score an own goal as he tried to pass the ball back to the goalkeeper, Tisetso Seodinyane. UFS had a chance to regain the lead, but captain Aphiwe Zulu missed a penalty that was awarded for a handball. Close to halftime however, Sithole pounced on another rebound to see the hosts take a 2-1 lead into the break. Shortly after halftime, Omphemetse Athibeng scored a third goal for UFS to give them a healthy lead. Deep into stoppage time, striker Boy Rantsoti carved his way through the CUT defence to score the Lions’ fourth goal to drive the final nail into the CUT coffin. - TUT’s Thuso Mlamla says they want to beat UJ
The 2023 Men’s Varsity Football competition heads to the final round-robin matches on Thursday and the much-anticipated fixture taking centre stage is defending champions TUT against UJ in a repeat of last year’s final. TUT then beat UJ 2-1 to hand the Pretoria side their third Varsity Football title. This time around the two clash in a battle to secure the top spot on the log. UJ currently lying first with TUT just one point below them. Although TUT suffered a shocking 2-nill defeat against UWC in the fourth round, it has been a solid campaign for Bushy Moloi’s side and midfielder Thuso Mlamla is looking to end his campaign with another title. “What didn’t work for us this season is that we wanted to finish the round-robin stages without a defeat, unfortunately, we lost to UWC. We will continue with what is working for us, the brotherhood we have in the team and how we are always there for each other on and off the field. The technical team always motivate us to be positive.” To many kids and youngsters around the world, football has been a tremendous tool to help them deal with demeaning social issues and an escape from poverty-stricken households. For his own life experiences, Mlamla has seen football as his refuge. “A lot of things have affected me as a young kid but that round thing which is football, has helped me a lot. I don’t know how to explain it but today I have a role model in Sergio Busquets, I have education and plans because of football. “I plan to play abroad in many competitive leagues and now I am still waiting for the Varsity Football season to end so I can go join my team, Pretoria Callies.” The 24-year-old Rustenburg-born has been one of the key figures in the TUT squad and a big game player for the Red Army. He made his Varsity Football debut against rivals Tuks when he was 18 and scored the winning goal against NWU. Mlamla says he remembers those days well. “I was so nervous and the stadium was full but I can say it was a special moment for me as the coach trusted me to start and finish the game. My best moment was against NWU, that same year in 2019 when I scored the winning goal from a long-range shot, it was a tough game and I am I managed to help my team.” Fixtures HERE. - UFH striker Sinobom Kapase reflects on team’s 2023 performance
With only one encounter against NWU remaining in the 2023 Men’s Varsity Football competition, UFH is languishing at the bottom of the log with four losses and two draws. UFH striker Sinobom Kapase was philosophical when asked about his team’s performance this year. “I honestly feel like Varsity Football is one of the best competitions for young players to play and showcase their talent. Despite a difficult season, we cherished every second of the competition." Kapase believes his squad took all the required steps to compete and that they were simply unlucky that things did not go as planned. "We were tested a lot in this competition, and I believe that will motivate us to come back stronger the next time. We struggled in the competition, not being able to collect three points and ending up at the bottom of the log.” When questioned about his best moment in the competition, Kapase mentions their home game against UFS in the second round, a 1-all draw. "In that game, we were at war, soldiers fighting for one another and refusing to let each other fall. When I missed that penalty, all my teammates rallied around me, and that's when I realised there was a fraternity among us. When I scored the equaliser, it restored optimism in the UFH family, which meant a lot to me”. Kapase says their last home game against NWU at the Davidson Stadium on Thursday (15:00) will be all about savouring the moment. Fixtures HERE. Tickets HERE. by Thembela Tangana
- Anticipation builds ahead of first-ever Bloemfontein derby
A cracking game is expected on Thursday night when UFS host CUT in what will be the first Bloemfontein derby in Men’s Varsity Football. CUT are looking for their first win of this season and on the other hand, we are looking for the three points to keep our chance alive of reaching the semi-finals. The spirit In the camp is good and the players are motivated by the big Bloemfontein derby.” Across town, ‘Amashangane’ are going to take this game seriously as well, as they will be playing for pride and while they respect Kovsies, they want to sign their campaign off on a high note. “We have nothing to lose and we are going to be playing for pride since it is a derby,” says captain and defender Simo Ndlovu. “There will of course be bragging rights up for grabs as well. It is UP-Tuks against defending champions Maties in Pretoria and NWU against UJ in Johannesburg next Monday in the semi-finals of the 2023 Varsity Netball championship. Tuks finished top of the log after beating NWU in the last match of the third and final bumper weekend at the Maties Coetzenburg Indoor Centre in Stellenbosch. NWU occupied the second spot, UJ third and Maties fourth. UP-TUKS 67-52 NWU UP-Tuks finished the season as the only undefeated team when they beat NWU 67-52 in the last round-robin match. The two sides had already qualified for the semi-final spots, with UJ and Maties joining them. The first 15 minutes kept the spectators on the edge of their seats, with the tense and physical competition between the two log leaders. However, Tuks showed to be the better side to take a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The match turned somewhat one-sided as it was approaching the half-time break with Tuks managing to hold onto ball possession, something NWU was failing to do. Tuks goal shooter Alice Kennon was superb as she was successful with all her attempts and took her side to a comfortable half-time lead of 36-22. With Proteas star Elmeré van der Berg introduced after the break, the Eagles goal scoring opportunities improved as they were playing a catch-up game. However, Jenny van Dyk's charges were the better side between the two as they ran away with it in the third and fourth quarters and ultimately won the battle. Bongiwe Msomi's charges are awaiting a winner between the two log leaders, UP-Tuks and NWU Eagles who will play later on Monday to see who they will face in the semi-finals. The upfront combination of Protea goal attack Owethu Ngubane and goal shooter Muhluri Hlatshwayo saw the Orange Army overpower UWC's defence in the first two quarters. Their lead after the first 15 minutes was 18-13 and at halftime, it was 34-20. UJ's physicality allowed them to close the spaces and intercept vital UWC balls during the third and fourth as the match became decidedly one-sided. The Orange Army comfortably walked away with all the points, something their fans will enjoy the most. They are the only side who came to Stellenbosch with their loyal and dedicated fan base. MATIES 62-31 MADIBAZ Maties showed strong character in front of their home crowd as they qualified for the semi-final following their 62-31 victory over Madibaz. It was a crunch one for the defending champions who needed to beat the Eastern Cape side to qualify for the top four teams. With the three spots already booked, the pressure was mounting for the Cape Winelands outfit. Stellenbosch fans came out in numbers for this clash to cheer for their side, but Madibaz were eager to spoil that party. The game saw pressure from the first minute as Madibaz goal shooter Kaylin Coetzee converted all her shots as the match went to the end of the first quarter with Maties leading by a single goal (11-10). Maties then started slowing the game down and tried to disrupt Madibaz’s plans. Goal shooter Rochelle Maree put Maties in front, who went into the half-time interval at 23-18. After the break, Maties picked up where they left off to keep the Madibaz attackers at bay, thanks to the strong physicality of goalkeeper Syntiche Kabuya who was massive in intercepting balls. Maties kept up the strong fight to end the match as winners and qualify for the semi-finals. The stubborn Kovsies had it easy yesterday against UWC while Wits were bossed around by UP-Tuks. It was a rusty first quarter from both sides, with a lot of goal-scoring chances missed that could have changed the outcome as the quarter ended with Kovsies leading by 10-8. Kovsies goal shooter Sheneca Smith who had contributed immensely to her side's win on Saturday missed countless crucial chances against Wits. The Johannesburg side did not sit down and watch but gave a strong fight during the second quarter as the match went to the interval with the Free State side leading 26-14. Both sides did not create clear goal-scoring chances in the third and fourth quarters. Zanele Mdodana's charges went into the first break, leading 12-8 The second quarter brought the fire from the Orange Army as they were playing catchup. , with UJ looked to be a better side the first few minutes as they were trying to catch up. Goal shooter Muhluri Hlatshwayo gave her side hope as the two sides levelled things up just two minutes before the interval. However, Maties proved to be the better side as the match went to the halftime break with the home side leading by 19-18. UJ managed to recover and overcome the noise from the home crowd in the third quarter. The game continued to be one-sided as Van Dyk's charges didn’t allow the Witsies any breathing space and scoring opportunities. Tuks stuck to their plans as they ended the third quarter leading 54-16. Debutants Wits simply didn’t have any answers for whatever their much more experienced opponents dished up. UFS-KOVSIES 61-33 UWC Four-time champions UFS-Kovsies were the better side following their 61-33 victory over UWC. It didn't take long before the physical Kovsies managed to identify the UWC's weakness as goal shooter Sheneca Smith’s goals took her side to 20-5 at the end of the first quarter. UWC began the second quarter with a little bit more pep in their step and with accurate shooting from Liandre Schoeman. This added pressure on Kovsies didn’t have the desired effect though as the Free Staters went into half-time with the score on 31-14. Burta de Kock’s team overpowered the UWC team in the third and fourth quarters, with the Cape-based team only managing five goals in the last 15 minutes of the match. Despite the victory, Kovsies are still outside the top four and a place in the semi-finals seems out the window. UWC on the other hand have only won one of their six matches and are languishing in sixth position. Quarter scores: 20-5 / 31-14 / 47-28 / 61-33 Player of the match: Xandri Fourie (UFS Kovsies) UFS-Kovsies: Ane Retief, Bianca Pienaar, Xandri Fourie, Buhle Kubheka, Charne van Vuuren, Demi-Leigh de Jager, Elri Groenewald, Liame de Lange, Reratilwe Letsoalo, Lethabo Sehlapelo, Sheneca Smith, Ruandi van Dyk. NWU 77-30 MADIBAZ NWU demolished Madibaz 77-30 to maintain their winning record. The Eastern Cape side came to the match in hopes of fighting for survival as they occupied the bottom spot on the log while the Eagles were looking to unseat the high-flying UP-Tuks at the top. The end of the first quarter saw the North West side taking a comfortable 15-5 lead after dominating the possession. During the second quarter, NWU coach Elsunet du Plessis introduced Proteas goal shooter Elmeré van der Berg for the injured Sunel Smit. - UJ statistician says players need to have self-belief
UJ statistician Nandipha Jack has admitted that the team is struggling with self-belief but says if they can believe that they are good enough it's possible to end the 2023 Varsity Netball tournament as winners. The Johannesburg-based side comes into the third bumper weekend at the Maties Coetzenburg Indoor Centre having in Stellenbosch sitting in third place on the log after three wins. Coached by Proteas captain Bongi Msomi, they are up against defending champions Maties and UWC. Jack says they will turn things around if they can apply their minds. "The team is struggling to have self-belief, this is as a team and individuals. If they can believe that they are good enough they can get to the end of this tournament as winners. The coaches know that they are all good enough. We just need to focus on us as a team and don't let anything distract us. "We also need to celebrate what we have been good at in these last few weeks, and then we can be able to fix where we know we can do better." With the side being full of young talent, Jack knows how crucial this weekend's fixtures are to the team. She says they just need to focus on the goals they have set up as a team. Being coached by Msomi is huge for the side, and Jack knows how important it is for the girls to have an experienced netballer and World Cup captain in their team. "We are learning a lot from her, the experience that she brings to the team is relevant to our players to go through. Sometimes it's nice for them to hear what they go through, she also goes through it as a player herself at the national level as well. “I think that's one of the things that are exciting about being coached by her. Her experience in playing and being coached by the best coach in Norma Plummer, she brings it all in both these roles." by Ayanda Frances Felem
- Protea star Phumza Maweni believes World Cup experience motivates UWC
Protea star and UWC assistant coach Phumza Maweni believes having played in the recent Netball World Cup, is having a good impact on the team in the 2023 Varsity Netball campaign. The 38-year-old Maweni played in her last World Cup in front of her home supporters when the prestigious event was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) last month. She says being part of Varsity Netball means a lot to her as she gets an opportunity to teach young players. "Having me as the assistant coach means a lot to these girls, it motivates and inspires them. I have so much respect for this team and that gives them confidence as well. Sharing the skills I have learnt makes a huge impact, this is something they will learn and use as motivation in the tournament." This week UWC are up against UFS-Kovsies and UJ during the third bumper weekend at the Maties Coetzenburg Indoor Centre. Maweni says the team have been working hard to prepare for this weekend's fixtures. "You can expect a different ball game from UWC. The girls are working so hard to improve every day. We looked at all the errors that cost us last weekend and try to fix them before the next round. "It's been a good ride for us, Varsity Netball allows us to compete with strong [universities] to improve as individuals and the team." Giving back to where her career started, Maweni says she decided to start the Phumza Maweni Foundation, an initiative that is based in Khayelitsha where she comes from. "I have a non-profit foundation based in the area of Khayelitsha. The aim is to play a role in changing young lives through netball in our community. "Keeping our young girls off the street, away from excessive abuse of substance and giving back to the community by being the starting point to young girls' better future, is what we have been doing and something we are focusing on." UWC currently occupies the sixth position on the log and Maweni says her side needs to minimise errors to get things right. "If we can minimise our errors I reckon we can match nicely with these teams. We struggle on the defensive side because of the height, we just need to convert and protect our centre pass [and then] I think we should be fine." Fixtures HERE. - Players That Impressed in Varsity Football round 6
There is a lot left to play for with only one round left in the 2023 Men’s Varsity Football tournament. Next week log leaders UJ take on number two and defending champions TUT while UWC, VUT and NWU will vie for the other two semi-final spots. Here are the players who impressed in round 6: Thuso Mlamla (TUT) Midfielder Thuso Mlamla was the standout performer in the encounter between TUT and UFH. He was controlling the middle of the park, defending more aggressively and making good defence-splitting passes to assist the TUT advance. He moved the ball quickly, which in some instances caught UFH defence napping. Another highlight of Mlamla’s game was a fantastic goal which he scored from outside the box. Advocate Mokwena (UJ) Advocate Mokwena had a brilliant game against UFS as together with Tumelo Molubi they controlled almost the entire 90 minutes of the game. He had a great impact on defence and attack, being the El Maestro for the Orange Army. He scored one goal, made three tackles including a goal-saving tackle and walked away with the player of the match award. He nearly had a brace after striking from the halfway line only to hit a crossbar. Lehlohonolo Nkaekae (CUT) Right winger Lehlohonolo Nkaekae had another busy evening on the park for his team. The self-proclaimed freekick specialist was a handful for the VUT defence to deal with, with sniping runs down the right, while he also put in some excellent through balls. Nkaekake came very close to equalising for his team with his shot from out wide hitting the top of the goal posts. Oatlhotse Ditlhobolo (NWU) Oatlhotse Ditlhobolo stood out with his exceptional ball handling, speed, in-swing and ball control in the match against UWC. Despite his impressive performance, his team suffered a loss. Ditlhobolo's skills and dedication however were a highlight of the game. Fixtures HERE. Tickets HERE.
- UJ, TUT, UWC and VUT edge closer to semis after round 6
With one round to go in the 2023 Men’s Varsity Football competition, teams are jostling for position and those coveted semi-final spots. UJ (1) and defending champions TUT (2) are sitting pretty at the top of the log while UWC (3) and VUT (4) make up the rest of the top four after favourable results in round 6. UWC 1-0 NWU In a highly anticipated matchup between NWU and UWC in the NWU Mafikeng Stadium fans were treated to an intense and tightly contested game of football, that the visitors finally won 1-0. The game started at a high pace, with both NWU and UWC displaying their skills and determination. The first 10 minutes of the game saw no goals from either side, as both teams' defences held firm. As things progressed, the intensity on the field remained palpable. The subsequent 20 minutes saw both teams launch numerous attacks, but the goalkeepers and defenders were up to the challenge. As the halftime whistle blew, the score was nil-all and both teams retreated to their respective locker rooms to regroup and strategize for the second half. The second half of the match continued with the same level of intensity. Both NWU and UWC were eager to break the deadlock and secure a lead. And that moment came in the 70th minute when UWC managed to find the back of the net. It was an impressive goal with Leandro De Sousa who will be remembered for his incredible long shot from the right wing. NWU responded with determination, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. However, UWC's defence held strong, denying NWU any clear-cut chances. VUT 1-0 CUT VUT kept their semi-final hopes alive with a 1-0 win over CUT at the CUT Stadium. The team from the Vaal will feel that it was mission accomplished after claiming a season double in Bloemfontein following their win over UFS earlier in the competition. The visitors were on the board as soon as the 6th minute with Lucky Raphala finding the back of the net following a break down the right flank, but it has to be said that the goalkeeping of Motlalentwa Mbolekwa was sloppy. This did prove to be the match-winning goal. CUT had more than their fair share of chances to score in the opening stanza, but a lack of execution saw them trailing 1-0 at the break. The home team were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when the winger, Oratile Mothibedi, was taken out in the penalty area by the VUT goalkeeper, Thabiso Moeketsi, while the latter was perhaps lucky not to be issued with a red card. CUT continued to create chances in the second half, but it was a case of panic stations when they got into a position to score. TUT 3-0 UFH Defending champions TUT travelled to the Eastern Cape to beat UFH 3-0 at the Davidson Stadium. Both teams played aggressively in the opening minutes of the game, with TUT pressuring UFH high and forcing them to play on the half-field. After nine minutes, TUT finally got on the board thanks to a superb counter press that found Lindokuhle Motsamai, who outmuscled his opponent and scored. TUT scored their second goal as a result of UFH's poor marking when Thuso Mlamla hit a massive shot outside the 18 area and found the back of the net. TUT began the second half with the same momentum as the first. UFH made some substitutions to help them on the attack but TUT's tenacious defence was switched on. TUT earned a penalty after a foul by Someleze Kapteni and Tebogo Lekaba, the captain of TUT, showed excellent leadership by converting. A devastating head collision occurred in the final 90th minute between UFH captain Bonke Nxiwa and Freddy Mahloane, resulting in forced substitutions for both teams. TUT won the game by 3-0 and credit must be given to their well-executed tactical approach. Forward Siphosihle Nkambule missed a one-on-one goal in the first few minutes of the game and then it was Sanele Ndlalane who broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Although UFS tried to join the party, the Orange Army continued dominating the game. UJ doubled their lead in the 39th minute as Malik Mashinini crossed the ball into the box, but it found its way into the net through some messy defending. UFS came into the second 45 minutes a revived side, applying pressure on the UJ defenders but failed to convert their chances. Player of the match Advocate Mokwena, who had a brilliant outing, got on the scoreboard thanks to an assist by Nkambule, and UJ walked away with a 3-0 victory.
