- UJ unbeaten streak continues as Maties find form with win over Madibaz
There were no major surprises in round four of Varsity Netball 2025 at the Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria. Defending champions UFS Kovsies swept past newcomers Varsity College while log leaders UJ continued on their winning ways with a victory over Wits. NWU handed UP Tuks their third defeat of the season and Maties beat Madibaz. UP-TUKS 54 – 67 NWU NWU Eagles claimed an imposing victory over UP-Tuks to register their third win of the season. The visitors put up a strong start to dent the Pretoria outfit’s hopes of survival in a struggling season. The Eagles cemented their dominance from the first quarter with a lethal attack and clinical shooting in the circle. A slow start from the hosts proved costly as the Potchefstroom team took a solid 10 goal lead at the end of the first 15 minutes, 11-21. NWU were not done yet as they returned to court blazing. It was one-way traffic in front of loud Tuks supporters at the Rembrandt Hall as shooter Sunel Smit cemented her supremacy. Tuks coach Amanda Mynhardt made creative changes to her side moving Marichelle Visagie to goal circle and captain Caroline Paul to centre to keep up with the score board. NWU was still in the lead at half-time, 22-36. In the third quarter, Tuks remained on the back foot with a lot of unforced errors giving the visitors confidence to pile on the pressure. With outstanding consistency, the Eagles pressed Tuks into the corner and stretched their lead to end the period of play 35-52. Tuks had a mountain to climb in the last 15 minutes and they finally seemed to find the momentum, sinking seven consecutive goals. It was not enough though for the Stripe Generation as the Eagles managed to hold on for the win, 54-67. UFS KOVSIES 86 – 13 VARSITY COLLEGE UFS Kovsies put the foot down against Varsity College to remain on track for a title defence. It was a tough day at the office for the newcomers and they found it hard to deal with the intensity, clinical and lethal display from Kovsies. The Bloemfontein based team took off relentlessly to lead 28-3 at the end of the first quarter. Trusted to fill in the big boots of Rolene Streutker, it was Mari du Raan who showed no mercy in the shooting circle. In the second quarter, it was Burta De Kock’s troops who capitalised on both power plays scoring a total of 12 goals. Displaying a player of the match performance, Du Raan remained glued to the hoop, with the score 44-7 at halftime. Varsity College looked stranded for most of the encounter as they had to focus on managing the deadly attack of the Kovsies. The onslaught continued in the third quarter, with the period of play ending on 58-10. Kovsies added 28 goals in the last 15 minutes, proving their supremacy to come out on top in the one-sided affair, 86-13. MATIES 44 - 29 MADIBAZ Maties found their rhythm as they edge Madibaz with a 15 point triumph. The Maroon Machine pulled out a solid performance to topple the in-form Madibaz. As anticipated, the first quarter was tightly contested with little separating the two sides. Maties proved to be more clinical and made use of their chances going to the second quarter with just a three-goal lead, 9-6. It was difficult for Madbiaz to deal with Maties’ speed in transition play in the second quarter and their woes were further dented when their key player Kelly du Toit suffered an ankle injury. Maties went into the halftime break leading 20-13. The Stellenbosch team capitalised on their strengths up front in the third quarter with deadly shooting from Hannah Kriel being fed sensationally from the circle’s edge. The penultimate quarter ended with Maties 31-21 in front. In the final 15 minutes, the Maroon Machine kept adding to the scoreboard with good interceptions while remaining composed at the back. Solid defence by Bianca Odendaal and Syntiche Kabuya added to the pressure on Madibaz. Despite a late effort by the Madibaz, the whistle went with the score on 44-29 and a solid victory for Maties. WITS 32 - 54 UJ UJ claimed bragging rights in the Johannesburg derby as they comprehensively beat neighbours Wits in round four’s last match. Bongi Msomi’s troops remain unbeaten and have cemented themselves as a real threat to take the title. Despite a tight opening quarter, the back to back runners-up (2023, 2024) showed unrelenting intent when they took to court. With a clear game plan from Dr Elsje Jordaan’s side, Wits held the Orange Army at bay, only giving them a three goal lead, 9-12. UJ kept taking their opportunities in the second quarter, with standout performances from Cornelia Mupenda on goal defence and the deadly duo of Kubura Abubakar and Owethu Sesandile Ngubane up front. It was a staggering quarter as the two sides continued to throw everything at each other. UJ however stretched their lead to 22-16 at the halftime break as Wits struggled to deal with the orange wave. In the third quarter, Wits found it difficult to maintain momentum and control of their plays as UJ kept possession and produced rewarding intercepts. They had a 23 goal advantage at the end of the quarter, 19-42. - Tuks captain Caroline Paul grabbing opportunities with both hands
Despite it being a rollercoaster season for UP-Tuks, captain Caroline Paul relishes the opportunity to lead her team for the first time on home soil for the next round of Varsity Netball 2025. It takes place on Sunday 7 September and Monday 8 September at the Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria. The team is in a rebuilding phase having lost key players to national duty and even though the former champions have only one of their three fixtures so far, Paul said they are as determined and hungry as ever within the new squad. “For most players it’s their first time wearing the stripe and playing Varsity Netball. We are working hard to make sure we reach the goal we have set out for ourselves. As for the experienced players, we try and uplift the new players to play at the standard we want them to play in. “The way coach Amanda (Mynhardt) runs and approaches the game, she understands that it is a different generation she is working with. The core principles are still there, like the winning culture at Tuks.” The responsibility of being captain is not lost on Paul. “It hasn’t sunk in yet; I think it will hit me when I am already out of the chair. It’s a huge role I think the biggest thing is remaining yourself as that is what got you to that position.” Paul has come a long way from losing her mother at the age of two to captaining the three-time champions. Growing up in the township of Kagiso on the West Rand, she didn’t initially think playing netball was something that could be regarded as a career. This all changed when SPAR Protea coach Jenny van Dyk, the then coach of Tuks, selected Paul after many trials and tribulations. For Paul, it was all worth it. “It was only in Grade 11 when I started taking netball seriously. We went for Gauteng Schools trials … I did not make it and I cried. In matric I went for trials again and gave it my all. It was the biggest year of my life, I made the team and got scouted by coach Jenny. For a second I thought she was joking but later the same day she sent me the contract. “My first year at Tuks, I did not make the first team. (It was) only in my 3 rd year that I made the squad but I did not play. In 2023 I finally made my debut in the last five minutes, I went in and turned the ball. I will never forget that day as it revived something in me.” Upcoming fixtures HERE. by Lehlogonolo Ditshego

Round 2 of Varsity Women’s Football saw defending champions UWC storm past UNIVEN with a 10-0 thrashing. UJ continued their winning start to the season, claiming a 2-0 victory over Wits to make it two wins from two. NWU bounced back from their opening-round defeat with a 2-1 win over CPUT, while the Tshwane derby between TUT and UP-Tuks ended in a 1-1 draw. All round 2 matches were played at the UJ Soweto Stadium B-Field and the main UJ Soweto Stadium. TUT 1-1 UP-Tuks In a thrilling Tshwane derby, TUT Women’s Football and UP-Tuks Women’s Football played out a 1-1 draw. The match got off to a fast-paced start, with TUT opening the scoring in the 5th minute through Mokgaetji Ramanna. However, Tuks quickly responded, just 2 minutes later, Lindiwe Nkambule deflected a ball into her own net, leveling the score at 1-1. The match remained evenly balanced, with both sides creating chances. By the 20th minute, TUT maintained their high press, putting constant pressure on Tuks’ defense, while Tuks chose to sit deep in a low block and wait for counter-attacking opportunities. In the 27th minute, one such counter was stopped when Nonzuzo Buthelezi fouled Moeletsi Digoro, and from the resulting free-kick, Sivuyile Njobeni came agonisingly close as his strike rattled the woodwork. As halftime approached, TUT's goalkeeper Retshepaone Ntwayagae suffered an injury in a contest for a ball with Moeletsi Digoro. The match was later suspended due to weather conditions and lightning, with the teams returning to the changing rooms until the weather improved. In the second half eventually the match resumed, TUT made a forced change, bringing in goalkeeper Rebona Tshoma to replace the injured Retshepaone Ntwayagae. The match remained tightly contested, with both teams probing and trying to create opportunities in midfield. Despite intense midfield battles, neither team could carve out clear-cut chances. In the end, the match ended 1-1, with both teams sharing the points. UWC 10-0 UNIVEN UWC Women’s Football started their Varsity Women’s Football title defense in spectacular fashion, defeating newcomers UNIVEN Women’s Football with a commanding 10-0 victory in round 2 of the tournament. UWC's offense exploded early, scoring four goals in the first 10 minutes. Captain Tiffany Kortjie began the onslaught just two minutes into the game, followed quickly by goals from Chelsea Daniels, Faith Maswanganyi, and Thembelihle Zulu. The relentless pressure forced UNIVEN's head coach, Carlo Negovha, to make an early substitution just 12 minutes in, bringing on Ayanda Mabapa for Sara Ramphabana. However, UWC’s scoring continued. Univen's goalkeeper, Matete Makena, conceded seven goals before being replaced by Nyeleti Mathebula. Unfortunately for UNIVEN, Mathebula immediately conceded an eighth goal upon entering the game. The goal fest was led by hat-tricks from Kortjie and Daniels. Akholiwe Matsotsi also contributed with a brace, while Maswanganyi and Zulu each scored one goal. NWU 2-1 CPUT In a thrilling encounter, NWU Women’s Fotball bounced back from their heavy defeat to UJ on Friday, emerging victorious against a stubborn CPUT Women’s Football side. The match got off to a high intensity start, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. In the 10th minute, NWU had a promising chance with a free kick taken by Veronicca Maswanganyi on the scoring line, but it failed to find back of the net. The deadlock was finally broken in the 23rd minute, thanks to a well-executed press from NWU. Nontobeko Gumede scored the opening goal for NWU after a CPUT defender's misplaced pass deflected off Neo Montshosi, and Gumede was quick to capitalise on the opportunity, finishing it off with precision. Just before the goal, a forced change was made in the 25th minute of the first half for CPUT, as goalkeeper Nonhle Ngema had to be substituted due to an injury, making way for Cassidy Primo. Just before the halftime whistle, CPUT equalised in the 38th minute with a stunning long-range goal by Mosetsanagape Leepile, capitalising on a defensive lapse by NWU. The score was now 1-1, and the teams headed into the break on level terms. In the second half, after several chances missed by NWU, they finally found the back of the net in the 54th minute. Tshiamo Gosiame Phiri scored a well-taken goal from a throw-in, giving NWU a 2-1 lead. The win marked a successful turnaround for NWU after their heavy defeat yesterday, while CPUT will look to regroup and bounce back after back-to-back defeats in their next match. The win marked UJ's second impressive performance of the tournament, earning them bragging rights in the city. UJ, known as the "Orange Army," dominated possession from the start, but Wits' defense held strong. Wits goalkeeper Bridgette Moekwa was in top form, making a series of crucial saves to frustrate UJ's relentless attack and keep the first half goalless. However, UJ's persistence paid off after the break. Just 16 minutes into the second half, Gugulethu Dlamini broke the deadlock. Making a counter-attack from midfield, she fired a perfect strike into the top right corner of the net, giving UJ the lead and making up for an earlier penalty miss that hit the crossbar. The lead was doubled in the 64 th minute when on-form striker Thato Mofolo scored a second goal. - UFS leadership steering the Kovsies ship on and off the court
UFS Kovsies have built their reputation not only on talent but also on leadership that sustains their winning culture. This year, co-captains Reratilwe Letsoalo and Xandri Fourie carry that mantle, shaping both performance and team identity. For Letsoalo, leadership begins before the whistle. “If we don’t all buy into the team motto, if we don’t stand for the same things, then it’s difficult to lead individuals,” she explained. She focuses on connection during warm-ups, ensuring trust and communication can withstand pressure. “When things get tough, if we’ve built that connection, we can look each other in the eye and know we have each other’s backs.” She admits the role comes with challenges, reflecting on the loss against UJ (50-53). “It felt like seven against nine at one stage. I was struggling with my own challenges while also trying to pull everyone together. That was one of the toughest leadership moments I’ve had.” Fourie draws from her experience with the SA Fast5 squad and Proteas trials. Exposure on that level has shaped her into a more resilient, strategic player. “It’s not just about talent. It’s about perseverance and mentality. I want to show the younger players they also have the strength to push through and grow,” she said. Together, the co-captains reflect the Kovsie values of unity, discipline, and excellence. Letsoalo stressed that leadership never excuses personal performance, while Fourie emphasized leading by example on and off the court. Former captain Refiloe Nketsa believes they are continuing an important legacy. “They’re handling the responsibility quite well, and they’re still to grow in it. Every team has different needs, and you have to adapt to different generations. Being Kovsies captain isn’t just a title, it’s a responsibility and a purpose.” Nketsa highlights longevity as key to Kovsie netball. “We’re not only building depth on court, but in leadership too. That’s how the Kovsie netball legacy stays alive.” This season, Letsoalo and Fourie carry that torch, ensuring the Kovsie culture remains unshaken. By Jürgen Smith Fixtures HERE .
- Jessica Matjiu wearing NWU Varsity Netball colours with pride
When Jessica Matjiu takes to the court in the purple colours of NWU for Varsity Netball, she carries something more than a ball and a bib. She carries the belief of her teammates and the university. “Representing NWU in Varsity Netball has been an honour and a privilege,” she said. “Wearing the purple colours is more than just being on court, it is about carrying the pride of the university, the support of my teammates, and the belief of everyone who contributes to our netball family.” With a place in last year’s SPAR National Netball Championships development squad, Matjiu’s standout moment in Varsity Netball 2025 came in the hard-fought third round victory over Maties. But it wasn’t for the scoreboard, rather for the way the team played for one another, Jessica said. “What made it so special wasn’t just the result but the way everyone gave their best and worked to make the person next to them shine and look good. That game showed the true meaning of teamwork.” Having to overcome injury to be able to play in this year’s Varsity Netball tournament present its own test. “It was difficult physically but even more challenging mentally because I had to stay positive and patient when I wasn’t able to contribute the way I wanted to,” she recalled. Recovery, a steady role in training, and support from teammates and coaches helped her rebuild momentum. Jessica’s life off the court has echoed the challenges on it. She spoke of late-night work on assignments, tight schedules and the discipline it required. “I remind myself that I am not only an athlete but also a student. The support from NWU has been incredible and it motivates me to keep pushing on both fronts.” Looking ahead, she plans to finish the season by contributing in any role she can and to build toward the next level. “I want to continue growing in the sport possibly pursuing opportunities at a higher competitive level and also give back by helping young players who look up to us. I want to show them that even through injuries and setbacks it’s possible to come back stronger.” Upcoming fixtures HERE . By Phenyo Mokgothu
- FNB Players That Impressed in Varsity Football Round 5
Varsity Football round 5 highlighted the divide between the tournament’s stronger and weaker sides. Log leaders UJ were held to a 1-1 draw by DUT, while UFS claimed bragging rights in the Bloemfontein derby with a 2-1 win over CUT. NWU secured all three points with a narrow 1-0 victory against TUT, and UP-Tuks saw their knockout hopes dented after being held to a 1-1 draw by Wits. Here are the players who made the biggest impact in their respective matches. Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk (NWU Men’s Football) NWU victory over TUT, right winger Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk stood out as the driving force behind the team’s attacking play. Wearing jersey number 23, Van Schalkwyk combined composure with creativity, using his pace and close ball control to stretch the opposition’s defense. His ability to maintain possession under pressure and deliver accurate passes into dangerous areas consistently put TUT on the back foot. Van Schalkwyk’s vision allowed him to link play effectively with the midfield and forwards, ensuring NWU sustained their attacking rhythm throughout the game. Beyond his technical execution, his movement off the ball created space for his teammates, while his relentless attacking intent forced TUT into defensive errors. His all-round display earned him the Player of the Match award, a recognition of his crucial role in NWU’s hard-earned victory. Lethokuhle Makhaya (UFS Men’s Men's Football) The UFS goalkeeper had very little to do in the saves department early on, but his distribution was key in the way Kovsies set up. His long balls over the top caused the CUT defense all sorts of problems, including an assist for the opening goal. He did enough late on to keep his side's 3 points intact. Tshepo Mosieleng (UJ Men's Football) UJ youngster Tshepo Mosieleng also impressed for the log leaders UJ. With his educated left foot, the first-year Sport Management student was UJ’s playmaker, slicing through the middle of the park like hot knife through butter. While he did not find himself on the scoresheet or with goal assist, Mosieleng has proved that UJ has assembled an impressive young talent in the Varsity Football tournament. Damian Overmeyer (UP-Tuks Football) Trialled and tested in UWC colours, Damian Overmeyer showing off all his experience in Tuks defence. Still in search of victory Tuks have only conceded once in this year’s edition, Damian Overmeyer produced another outstanding performance for the Stripe Generation. From marshalling the defence exceptionally to opening his account for Tuks and scoring their first goal of the season in a man of the match performance. “The score does not reflect how the game went out today, we dominated the game but unfortunately, they got a penalty, and we went one nil down. We created the chances but unfortunately not scoring the goals. Honestly, I am looking at the teams’ performance before mine because after disappointing results you do not take in how you performed you just push as hard as you can for the team on the day. I am trying my best and if my performances are showing then I am glad. We are focusing on winning the remaining games and maybe things would a take different turn.” Fixtures: HERE Tickets: HERE.

In the final moments of the match, Tuks sealed their victory with a fifth goal through Rethabile Makhwela, who came off the bench, rose highest to meet a corner kick taken by Mmakhgotso Rose Mashishi and striked the ball into the net, making it 5-1. UJ 4-0 NWU UJ Women's Football team kicked off their season in style, registering a decisive 4-0 home victory against NWU Women’s Football. It was a one-sided affair from the start, with UJ dominating possession and keeping NWU's defence under constant pressure. The Orange Army wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Sbongakonke Mzobe found the back of the net just seven minutes into the game with a perfectly placed shot in the top right corner. The star of the show, however, was Thato Mofolo. She was in sensational form, scoring a brilliant hat-trick before being substituted in the second half by coach Nthabeleng Modiko to rest her for upcoming matches. NWU's goalkeeper, Mmabatho Tladi, was kept busy throughout the match, facing a barrage of shots from the UJ attack. Despite her best efforts, she couldn't stop the four goals that sealed a convincing victory for the hosts. With a 2-0 lead at halftime and another two goals in the second half, UJ cruised to a well-deserved win. Coach Modiko's strategic substitutions in the second half, resting key players, suggest that the team is ready for the challenges ahead. SCORERS: UJ: Thato Mofolo X3, Sbongakonke Mzobe. - UFS roar in derby as NWU edge TUT in Varsity Football round 5
Round five of Varsity Football lived up to expectations, with the Bloemfontein derby delivering an exciting clash as UFS triumphed 2-1 over rivals CUT at Shimlas Park. NWU edged past TUT in a dominant display, showcasing their strength and control to secure a well-deserved 1-0 victory at NWU Mahikeng Stadium. UP-Tuks’s knockout hopes suffered a setback after a 1-1 draw against Wits at Tuks Stadium, while log leaders UJ managed to salvage a point against DUT. TUT 0-1 NWU NWU Men’s Football showed great control on the ball and tactical discipline to earn a hard-fought win over TUT Men’s Football in their Varsity Football clash on Thursday. From the opening whistle, NWU set the tempo with a possession-based approach that left TUT chasing shadows. In the first 30 minutes, NWU enjoyed nearly 70% ball possession and produced three shots on target, while their opponents struggled to test the goalkeeper. The Mahikeng-based side’s midfield dominance and patient build-up highlighted their intent to dictate play. TUT’s plan was built around transitional football, looking to strike through counterattacks. While this strategy allowed them occasional forward runs, the lack of precision in the final third meant their attacking threat was limited. With no shots on target in the opening half, TUT were left frustrated against a well-structured NWU backline. The breakthrough came in the second half when NWU’s sustained pressure finally paid off. A well-worked move down the right flank opened space for striker Momelezi Mngati, who clinically converted to put his side ahead. The goal was a product of sharp ball rotation and intelligent movement, underlining NWU’s attacking discipline. Mngati’s strike proved to be the decisive moment as TUT failed to mount a meaningful comeback. Despite increasing their intensity late in the game, their efforts were neutralised by NWU’s defensive organisation and composure in possession. The victory not only secured three crucial points for NWU but also demonstrated their ability to combine tactical patience with attacking flair. For TUT, the performance highlighted areas of concern in the final third that will need urgent attention as the competition progresses. SCORERS NWU : Momelezi Mngati Player of the Match : Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk (NWU) TEAMS NWU: Ethan Mokwena, Knowledge Muleya, Lucky Letwaba, Aphelele Sibisi (captain), Lucas Seromo, Thapelo Letsholonyane, Thabang Majoro, Bokamoso Ramoshoane, Momelezi Mngati, Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk, Reatlegile Kgosithebe. UJ 1-1 DUT In a thrilling match that defied their recent record, coach Zipho Dlangalala’s Durban DUT Men’s Football secured a hard-earned point against the UJ Men’s Football on Thursday night. Playing on UJ's home turf, DUT showed no signs of discouragement from their four consecutive losses, starting the game with impressive confidence. The game began with a cautious pace, as DUT spent the first 10 minutes sizing up UJ's possession. It wasn't long before DUT seized an opportunity, with their captain, Xolani Mkhonza, scoring the opening goal from a penalty kick in the 14 th minute after a UJ handball in the box. The penalty was a direct result of UJ's miscommunication at the back, leading to a corner kick that put the home team under pressure. The goal visibly rattled UJ, causing their midfield to falter and create turnover balls that the visitors eagerly capitalized on. Despite multiple attempts on goal from both sides, DUT maintained their 1-0 advantage going into halftime. The second half kicked off with a high tempo as UJ relentlessly pursued an equalizer. Their persistence paid off in the 61 st minute when striker Keletso Sekhwela scored with a perfectly placed header from a corner kick delivered by Teboho Makhalanyane. Both teams had multiple chances in the second half. UJ’s Karabo Modisane and Makhalanyane made several threatening runs into the DUT box, but the visitors’ defence held strong. DUT’s players also shined, with Phiweyinkosi Mchunu, Iviwe Sodidi, and captain Mkhonza playing pivotal roles in driving their team forward. DUT’s solid defensive line proved to be a fortress, effectively shielding goalkeeper Samkelo Zulu from further goals. The final minutes of the match were tense. DUT finished the game with only 10 men on the field after substitute Luyanda Ntuli received a red card less than 5 minutes on the pitch, for fouling UJ’s Modisane just outside the box. Despite being a man down, the team's resilience did not waver. After 95 minutes of intense football, DUT walked away with a crucial point, a significant achievement after five challenging games. SCORERS UJ: Keletso Sekhwela DUT: Xolani Mkhonza Player of the Match: Sanele Mncube (UJ) TEAMS: UJ: Yasidu Lifa, Thabo Moshikere, Bonolo Magoro, Karabo Modisane, Tshepo Mosieleng, Keletso Sekhwela, Sanale Mncube, Sinenhlanhla Mkhonza, Teboho Makhalanyane, Siyabonga Nhlapo, Kyle Van Rensburg. UP-Tuks 1-1 Wits UP-Tuks Men’s Football knock out hopes where dented by Wits Men’s Football as the Stripe Generations were held to a one-all draw at Tuks Stadium. The home side remains static on the sixth position after failing to register their first win of the season. Desperate for a win the UP-Tuks played hosts to Wits with hopes high to survive. The Pretoria outfit is without a victory in four rounds picking up three draws and a defeat against UJ in their last outing. Nicholas Stothard’s side continues to struggle, remaining winless after five rounds. The Stripe Generation started brightly, pressing the visitors hard in the early stages and looking threatening from set pieces as well as when building from the back. However, missed opportunities in the first half once again proved costly, as their ongoing struggle to convert chances continues to haunt them. Wits relied on quick counter-attacks and were rewarded just before halftime when they earned a penalty. Simphiwe Mabena stepped up confidently and slotted it home to give the visitors the lead at the break, capping off an action-packed first half with Wits ahead. Stripe Generation returned from the break with clear mission as Camagu Mdevulana saw his efforts hit the upright. From being a wall in Tuks defence to grabbing an equalizer as Damian Overmeyer pulled one back for Tuks. On the hour mark Overmeyer found himself in box and perfectly executed the header finding an open net. The game ended in a 1-1 draw at Tuks Stadium, leaving the home side still searching for form. UFS 2-1 CUT In a pulsating Bloemfontein derby at Shimla Park, the UFS Men’s Football showcased their dominance to secure a well-deserved 2-1 victory over cross-town rivals CUT Men’s Football. The home side set the tone early, dictating play with a clear game plan centred on long balls that left CUT’s defence scrambling. UFS struck first in the 25th minute when goalkeeper Lethokuhle Makhaya’s pinpoint long ball found Kagiso Semenya, who produced a moment of magic with a delicate chip over the CUT keeper. The Kovsie forwards continued to wreak havoc, exploiting their aerial prowess. Just before the break, Jarome Jansen coolly converted a penalty, doubling the lead and sending Shimlas into half-time firmly in control at 2-0. Despite their dominance, UFS were left ruing missed opportunities, with winger Omphemetse Athibeng failing to capitalise on several chances that could have put the game beyond reach. CUT, limited to counter-attacking moments in the first half, showed resilience after the interval. The visitors created a handful of chances and earned a few corners but lacked the cutting edge to truly threaten. The game sprang to life in the 75th minute when CUT substitute Katlego Ramotete curled a stunning free kick past Makhaya, igniting hope for a comeback. Reinvigorated, CUT piled on late pressure, but Shimlas’ defence held firm, weathering the storm to secure the bragging rights. For CUT, it was a case of too little, too late, as the hosts celebrated a hard-fought victory in a derby that lived up to its billing. SCORERS UFS: Kagiso Semenya, Jarome Jansen. - Log leaders UJ not getting carried away with impressive performance so far
The Orange Army is on an impressive run in the Varsity Football 2025 tournament clinching the top spot on the log after four matches with three wins and a draw, a trajectory that would have many teams celebrating. But for Head Coach Karabo Mogudi, this success is just the beginning of a delicate journey. He sees a team with immense potential, but one that is still a work in progress. "The team is on a winning trajectory and it’s easy to get carried away with such results," says Coach Mogudi. "However, we are not under any illusion that we don’t have anything to improve and several issues to rectify." Despite their strong start, Mogudi emphasizes that the "Orange Army" cannot afford to get complacent. As they prepare to face DUT, a team that has yet to win a game, the coach is focused on maintaining respect for every opponent. "We welcome DUT at our stadium, and they have an experienced coach. Coach Zipho Dlangalala has worked in some highly recognized projects throughout his career and will be looking to improve his team to get their first win in the tournament," he said. "This can be tough, so, we have to respect every opponent in this competition." The UJ team is actively evaluating their performance after every game and training session, a process that Mogudi says is crucial for their growth. They are striving for a consistent process and will approach every game with the same intensity. "It’s very important to remain vigilant and ensure that we secure a semifinal spot in the competition. To be at the top of the log or in second position comes with benefits of home matches, but we must secure a semifinal slot first. We have to keep our eyes focused on our objectives to get the desired outcome at the end of the competition,” he says. Fixtures: HERE Tickets: HERE By: Collen Maepa
- UNIVEN ready to make a strong debut in Varsity Football Women 2025
As newcomers to the Varsity Football Women's tournament, the University of Venda have set the bar high, showing clear intent to compete at the top level and make a strong statement in this year’s competition. Head coach Mbuyelo Magoro says that although his team faced tough opponents while qualifying for this year’s campaign, he admits it was an exciting and rewarding experience for his girls. “Qualifying for the Varsity Women’s Football was an incredible and thrilling experience for us. The journey was not easy, we had to face about five strong teams to secure our spot. That made the qualification even more special,” said Magoro. “For us as UNIVEN Ladies FC, this is history in the making, because it’s the very first time the University of Venda will participate in Varsity Football. It’s a huge achievement not just for the team, but for the entire institution, as it marks our debut on a national stage.” Magoro says their expectations are straightforward, they want to compete at a high level, prove that they are capable of holding their own against strong opponents, and at the same time gain valuable experience that will help us grow and improve as a team. “This is our first time, so we see it as both a challenge and a learning opportunity. The strategy is to focus on teamwork, discipline, and making sure we compete in every single match with confidence,” he said. “We know the road to qualification was not easy, so we are prepared to put in the same fight and use the tournament as a platform to grow stronger for future competitions.” The Limpopo based side will be led by Kanganyiso Gracious, as their captain, Magoro says Gracious was selected because of her strong leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch. “She’s reliable in defense, committed to the team, and has shown that she can inspire her teammates to give their best. She’s truly the piece of the puzzle that holds our backline together, and we trust her to lead us through this debut season,” he adds. “We have a good mix of both experienced players and exciting talent. A key player is “Remember Khumbula Radu”, our defensive midfielder. She has been with the team for close to three years, has excellent football IQ, and is extremely versatile - she can play across almost every position on the field." “Another standout is “Dabana Andani Nichole”, our winger, who is quick, creative, and has the ability to deliver goals in crucial moments.” UNIVEN Provisional Squad Nthabiseng Makofane, Ayanda Mashilo Mabapa, Nsovo Ngobeni, Gracious Kanganiso, Advice Mohlala, Thubelihle Hlobsile Mbokazi, Rinee Shellot Nemukula, Mpho Pandelani, Thabelo Mudau, Lebogang Phillipine Marakalla, Boitumelo Mahlake, Pulane Millicent Madire, Mulalo Takalani Elisa Mudau, Khumbula Remember Radu, Katekani Shalyn Baloyi, Sara Ramphabana, Mankgopo Nelly Phoshoko, Nokuthula Kearabetswe Mnyakeni, Andani Nichole Dabana, Wam Hope Rikhotso, Mphiriseni Onicca Netshitavhe, Thandululo Remember Tshibasani, Nyeleti Pascalin Mathebula, Matete Mante Makena. - NWU Eagles aim to bounce back against TUT and move into a top 4 spot
NWU will be looking to return to winning ways when they face TUT in their round five Varsity Football 2025 encounter at the NWU Mahikeng Stadium. The Eagles come into the clash sitting in fifth spot on the log with just two goals scored in their opening four matches, a statistic that coach Nkululeko Malgas acknowledges is a concern despite his side’s attacking intent. “It is a concern not converting, partly because I am happy with the number of chances that we are creating. In our last two matches against UP Tuks and UFS, both of their goalkeepers were awarded Man of the Match accolades. We need to convert the scoring chances we are creating,” Malgas said. “We need to repay our loyal supporters, as I am sure they’ll come in more numbers. UP Tuks at least created a few chances, but Kovsies couldn’t bother us, hence they didn’t even get a corner.” TUT, who are traditionally strong and physical, present another tough challenge. However, NWU will draw confidence from their previous meeting in Mahikeng. “If you remember the last time they visited us last season, we won. I am sure they will come like a wounded lion, seeing their form in this year’s edition. We will be tested, and I can assure you that we will be equal to the task,” he said. With home advantage and the desire to improve in front of goal, NWU will aim to make a statement against TUT and climb the Varsity Football table. Kick-off is set for Thursday evening at the NWU Mahikeng Stadium. Fixtures: HERE Tickets: HERE. By: Phenyo Mokgothu
