UWC aiming for strong start to Varsity Football Women 2026

The University of the Western Cape head into this year's Varsity Football Women's tournament as defending champions, but are determined to build on the progress made in recent seasons, despite changes to the technical team.

New head coach Vulindlela Biko has set clear objectives for the campaign: remain competitive throughout the tournament, continue the team's upward trajectory and ensure UWC delivers strong performances in every match.

With pre-season preparations now complete, Biko is confident his side is ready for the challenge.

"Our preparations have gone well, with the players showing great commitment throughout our pre-season programme," he said.

"The hard work has been done and now our focus shifts to performing when it matters most."

UWC enters the tournament following significant changes on the coaching bench. Long-serving head coach Thina Mbuli has joined the national women's team, Banyana Banyana, while assistant coach Msekeli Mvalo has taken up a new role at Tuks.

Although the departures mark the end of an important chapter for the programme, Biko believes the squad has embraced the transition and is prepared to write its own success story.

"The departure of assistant coach Msekeli Mvalo is significant, but we have confidence in the remaining members of the technical team and the leadership within the squad to ensure continuity," he said.

"Change always brings challenges, but it also creates opportunities for growth. We believe the players have adapted well and are ready to compete."

Biko insists the coaching changes will not distract the team from its ambitions. Instead, he believes the collective spirit within the squad will be the key to another competitive campaign.

"Our focus remains on our collective goals. The players are highly motivated, everyone is pulling in the same direction, and we are committed to ensuring UWC remains among the strongest teams in the tournament."

With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, UWC will be aiming to make a strong start and prove they can remain one of the leading contenders in this year's Varsity Women's competition.
