  • FNB Players That Impressed in Varsity Football Round 2

Round 2 of the Varsity Men’s Football did not disappoint with unexpected results that left teams fuming. VUT showed their best performance so far in the campaign where they thrashed TUT 4-0. NWU stole the show at UWC Stadium having beaten the home side 1-0, UP-Tuks thumped CUT 4-1 while UFS defeated DUT at Shimla Park.    Several players stood out and here is our selection for the FNB Players That Impressed. Omphemetse Athibeng (UFS)     Omphemetse Athibeng had a blinder for UFS in their 1-0 against DUT in Bloemfontein and he is definitely a player to keep an eye on. Athibeng seemed to be an unassuming figure on the field until he touched the ball for the first time. He had speed, he had skill, power, and the finesse of a quality player. His cracking goal was the difference between the two teams and he was rightly named as the player of the match.    “After our win last week there was pressure on us to deliver again, especially at home. Win has given us a lot of confidence going forward, that is also down to our training. We're confident and we will be gunning for TUT next week.”    Momelezi Mngati (NWU)     While NW's duo of Lucas Seromo and Reatlegile Kgosithebe dictated matters for the visiting side from the right side of the field it was Momelezi Mngati who handed the Eagles three points in round 2. Mngati who stood out with an impressive outing against last year's finalists.       "We came with a plan and that was to hold the line because we know they love to counter attack. When the moment presented itself we used our chances and it paid off."    Sibusiso Motsepa (VUT)     A brace from Sibusiso Motsepa saw underdogs VUT overpower defending champions TUT 4-0 The Vaal based team controlled much of the game and Motsepa had this to say about his perfromance.   “I'm happy I was able to help the team, we didn't start well but this result will help us.  Ahhh the two goals are what the coach said, to score more because I have that ability. Most importantly is that the team won and we move to next week on a high.”   Samukelo Ngodela (UP-Tuks)     The Stripe Generation's number 3, Samukelo Ngodela, was the difference between the two teams with his ability to run off the ball and read the game well. He won most duels in the middle of the park and also bagged for a goal for the visiting team. Ngodela proved difficult for CUT with his skills and prowess and his performance earned the FNB Player of the Match award.   “It was a good game for us as a team, and for me it was also the best performance for me. We stuck to our game plan and we did everything the coach told us.”   Fixtures   HERE    Tickets   HERE

  • VUT shock defending champs TUT in round 2 of Varsity Football 2024

Round 2 of the Varsity Men’s Football saw a shock result and some big wins on Thursday, 1 August, as VUT hammered TUT by four goals to nil, UP-Tuks showed no mercy as they came out 4-1 victors over helpless CUT while  the NWU Eagles pickes up a crucial away win against 2023 semi-finalists UWC.   VUT 4-0 TUT     Defending Champions TUT were looking for a much-improved performance after their disappointing one-all draw against the UWC at home last week when they faced VUT in their second encounter.    VUT started the brighter, knitting the ball among themselves but with no end-product early on. Nonetheless, VUT’s control of the match paid dividends as they found the back of the net in the 30th minute, courtesy of holding midfielder Lehlohonolo Ncambe.   With Bushy Moloi’s men still smarting, VUT scored their second goal four minutes later, this time with Lucky Raphala making no mistake in the penalty box, 2-0 to the home side.   It became the Sibusiso Motsepa show in the second half, with the left-winger scoring the third in the 48th minute, it became apparent that this would be a long night for TUT.  Motsepa capitalized on poor defending from TUT when he scored from the penalty spot, making it 4-0, a double whammy for Moloi’s men when they received a second yellow card, as their defender went for an early shower.   VUT controlled much of the game with thirty minutes remaining and a man up; dictating the pace of the game, passing it among themselves and trying to invite the stubborn TUT defense towards them, however, it remained 4-0 at the end of the match.     Scorers:  Lehlohonolo Ncambe, Lucky Raphala, Sibusiso Motsepa 2 (VUT).    FNB Player of the Match: Kgahlisho Kgomoeswana (VUT).    VUT:  Tebogo Mosia, Kgotso Nhlapo, Gontse Kole, Kamohelo Ramalefane, Perceverance Mashabane, Lehlohonolo Ncambe, Marumo Lekoloane, Lucky Raphala, Kgahlisho Kgomoeswana, Sibusiso Motsepa, Sibusiso Baloyi.    TUT: Luyanda Mandindi, Precious Mohale, Katlego Motlhale, Mnqobi Khumalo, Karabo Rangata, Anda Yamile, Thuso Mlamla (C), Thobani Ngwenya, Swazi Kupa, Tebatso Manyane, Lesedi Khosi.     UFS 1-0 DUT     UFS Men’s Football recorded their second win of the 2024 Varsity Men’s Football on Thursday with a 1-0 win against the DUT at Shimla Park in Bloemfontein.    The opening exchanges saw the two teams sizing each other up, but it was the hosts, UFS, who found their rhythm a lot quicker in the game, and when they did, they managed to set up camp in the DUT half of the field. Tested the defence of the visitors from KZN on numerous occasions, but DUT was very good on the counter.     The deadlock was broken when the hard-working Omphemetse Athibeng, who was the player of the match, collected a beautiful long cross, and with his second touch drove the back into the back on the net to put UFS in the lead. UFS had a few more chances before the break, but the score remained unchanged at 1-0 for the Free Staters at half-time.    The second half was a lot less entertaining than the first 45 minutes and the intensity just wasn’t there from either side. It struggled to get going and this could be because of several lengthy stoppages for injured players to receive medical treatment. The match ended with UFS walking away with all the points.       Scorers:  Omphemetse Athibeng (UFS)     FNB Player of the Match: Omphemetse Athibeng (UFS)    UFS:  Omphemetse Matlhogonolo Athibeng, Arlonso Diedricks, Obakeng Seekoei, Thandolwethu Khoza, Boy Rantsoti, Moeti Mofokeng, Iviwe Dyabuza, Samkelo Nakedi, Jarome Jansen, Sandile Mhlanga, Tisetso Daniel Seodinyane.    DUT: Philasande Mthembu, Xolani Mkhonza (C), Sifundo Ngema, Theo Nzama, Awande Ngidi, Alibongwe Mthiyane, Amahle Mkhize, Mlamuli Hlongwa, Thobani Jwara, Nhlakanipho Ngwenya, Nkululeko Nkosi.      CUT 1-4 UP-Tuks     The visiting team's 3 goals came from a set piece after forcing the CUT to commit crucial mistakes outside the box.    The visitors pressed CUT for most of the match which worked in its favor, by half time Tuks were leading CUT by 1-0 through Raymond Tshwane Matlamela strike to hand the Pretoria based side something to chew at the interval.    Things then changed for the worse for the CUT after Tuks upped their tempo and once again pressed the home side to cause crucial errors.   Tuks later doubled their lead in the 51st minute through a powerful shot from man of the match, Samukelo Ngodela, who slotted the ball outside the box. However, soon afterward the home team pulled on back, giving hope to supporters on the stand courtesy of Pogisho Dikole. But their hopes were soon dashed after the visiting team increased their lead to 3-1 and later 4-1 with goals from Tshepiso Mahlangu, Nkosana Shabalala respectively.  The night saw Tuks walking away with the maximum points on the road, winning the match 4-1.     Scorers:      CUT – Pogisho Dikole    UP-Tuks - Raymond Tshwane Matlamela, Samukelo Ngodela, Tshepiso Mahlangu, Nkosana Shabalala.     FNB Player of the Match: Samukelo Ngodela (UP-Tuks)    CUT:  Kananelo Sehebeng, Ramokhafeng Montsi, Jeffrey Mokoena, Simo Ndlovu (C), Alwande Sibiya, Tiisetso Mpholoana, Pogisho Dikole, Mzwakhe Shabalala, Nkosingiphile Lubisi, Oratile Mothibedi, Mthabiseni Mlambo.    UP-Tuks: Jayden Van Der Walt, Khotatso Balepile, Nkosana Shabalala, Edward Rankwe, Tshepiso Mahlangu (C), Paballo Mamabolo, Joshua Wood, Matome Rangata, Raymond Tshwane Matlamela, Samukelo Ngodela, Mnqobi Mkhize.   UWC 0-1 NWU     In crisp and cool Cape Town weather conditions, NWU stunned their hosts with a second-half goal to claim a (0-1) victory against UWC in the Varsity on Thursday in Bellville.  The win lifts NWU off the bottom of the log and leaps UWC while an emphatic 4-0 victory for VUT means that the side from Bellville finds themselves in the second-last position - based on goal difference - after two rounds.  Despite both sides pushing hard in the opening half, the teams were deadlocked on 0-0 as the players headed into the sheds for the halftime break.  It was all NWU in the second half with the visitors playing with a lot more confidence and bravado while in contrasting style the hosts held back and played a very defensive type of football. It was this fearless style of the NWU side that resulted in them being the first to get onto the scoreboard.  The deadlock was finally broken in the 62nd minute when NWU scored through a well-worked effort in the midfield catching the UWC defence off guard. Momelezi Mngati fired the ball into the top right corner, UWC 0-1 NWU.  It was a spirited effort from the home side in the final 15 minutes of the match, but it was all in vain as they remained goalless after two rounds in the 2024 Varsity Football season.    Scorers:  Momelezi Mngati (NWU)     FNB Player of the Match: Momelezi Mngati (NWU)    UWC:  Leandro De Sousa, Vuyani Ncontsa, Arnold Dube, Shuaib Martin, Ranieri Salvini, Damian Overmeyer (C), Somila Kostile, Jadan Zeeman, Qhayisa Lekata, Leathan Croats, Siyanda Mabadi.    NWU: Kamogelo Matane, Olebogeng Moeti (C), Lucky Letwaba, Sousa Mathe, Lucas Seromo, Thabang Majoro, Xolani Masethi, Momelezi Mngati, Reatlegile Kgosithebe, Pascual Tivane, Itumeleng Selemela.       Fixtures   HERE    Tickets   HERE

  • Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis praises the standard of Women's Varsity Football

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has praised the standard of Varsity Women's Football and its role in women's football in South Africa. Ellis, who was among those who attended the 2024 Varsity Women's Football over the weekend at TUT Stadium, says varsity football has played a huge role in the development of women's football.  "A lot of players leave school and go straight to varsity and don't play at clubs and now they get to play not just for the varsity team in the league, whichever league they play in," said Ellis.    "Varsity football tournament is really big and it has become a really big tournament over the years, a prestigious tournament to say. So this tournament plays a huge, huge role in the development of women I must say."     "And I think university football is big, where it used to have a national team, and many of the players played for the varsity, national team and Banyana Banyana."    During the group stages and the playoffs several players put in outstanding performances that deserve to be recognised.    Ellis said when she goes to games or tournaments she's not only going to scout players.    "I'm going to monitor the players as well because I go and watch players throughout the season so I like to monitor the progress," said Ellis.     "I like to watch them against different teams so that I have a better understanding of what they can add.     "I think when it comes to seeing players with potential, I've seen a lot of these players already play in the league.    "So after modern monitoring of players in the league to see their consistency, to see if they can add value, when do we bring them in."    It was the defending champions UWC who showed that they meant business as the Cape side worked hard to book themselves for a final showdown against the six-time champions TUT.    "It's difficult to gauge the final, I think both teams have shown over the tournament that they are both fighters, you know, UWC lost their first game against UJ, and, yeah, they're in the final now," she said.    "TUT hasn't been that consistent over the tournament, either, but had a very good comeback win on their home turf, you know, against probably one of the favorites, UJ.    "But the final is a different kind of game, it's a once-off game and a winner takes all."    Fixtures   HERE        Tickets   HERE

  • Statement regarding the hosting of Varsity Football matches at TUT

Varsity Sports and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) regret to announce that all Varsity Football Men’s matches scheduled to be hosted at TUT will now be played at an off-campus venue. In accordance with Varsity Sports rules the opposing team will be given the opportunity to host, and if they are unable to, then a suitable neutral venue will be determined. This decision was taken collectively based on the feedback received by the local Venue Operations Centre (VOC) Commander that the TUT infrastructure is not suitable to host events of the magnitude of Varsity Men’s football . “Student safety is of the utmost importance, and we feel that the correct decision has been made, given the feedback from the VOC,” says Lisa Roux, Head of Varsity Sports. “We are working with all teams in the tournament to ensure a smooth transition to new hosting venue.”

  • FNB Players That Impressed in Varsity Football Women's Group Stages

The start of the 2024 Varsity Women’s Football took center stage on Friday 26 July at TUT Stadium where we saw goals galore as the top teams battled for playoff spots and it was ultimately defending champions UWC and six-time former champs TUT who made it through to the final on 9 August. During the group stages and the playoffs several players put in outstanding performances that deserve to be recognised. Here are the four who impressed us the most and no doubt had scouts taking notes. Ronnel Donnelly (UWC)   Even though UWC took a shock beating in their first match courtesy of UJ, that didn't demotivate the Western Cape-based side. The defending champions turned up the heat in round 2 where Donnelly delivered a memorable perfromance and bagged a brace and the FNB Player of the Match award in their 6-1 win over CUT. It didn't end there as Donnelly was on the scoresheet once again in round 2 claiming back-to-back FNB Player of the Match awards in the 2-0 Cape derby victory over neighbours CPUT before sealing her four goal tally with another stunner in their 5-0 over NWU in round 3. Look out for her in the final on 9 August where she will be crucial if UWC are to defend their title.    Gugu Dhlamini (UJ) Gugu Dhlamini was outstanding in round 1 and steered her side to a 1-0 victory over the defending champions UWC. Her performance was the highlight of the game as she collected the FNB Player of the Match award for her efforts. Even though she failed to convert from the penalty spot in UJ's 4-0 victory over CPUT, Dhlamini played a huge role in setting up   Thato Mogolo for UJ’s fourth goal. The Orange Army didn't make the final, but Dhlamini is definitely one to watch for the future.   Zanile Khoza (NWU)   NWU forward Zanile Khoza was standout perfromer for the Eagels in all their matches and a key player in their game agaisnt Wits where she opened the scoring and got the ball rolling in their 3-1 victory. Khosa registered her name once again on the scoresheets in the crucial win against UP-Tuks to send NWU into the semifinal against UWC.   Tshegofatso Motlogelwa (TUT)   TUT captain Tshegofatso Motlogelwa lead from the front in the group stages as her side hunts for their seventh title. Getting herself on the scoresheet twice in their 2-1 win over UP-Tuks, a performance that saw her awarded the FNB Player of the Match award for her contribution on overall perfromance. She was also was among the scorers in the Red Army 6-0 over Wits before helping her side qualify for the final with a strike against UJ in the semi's. Keep an eye on her when they meet UWC in the final on 9 August where she wil no doubt play a pivotal role.    Fixtures   HERE       Tickets   HERE

  • NWU aims to rebound against UWC in crucial round 2 away game

The NWU Eagles are gearing up to face UWC in Cape Town on 1 August, following a 3-1 loss to the UFS in their first game of the tournament and coach Nkululeko Malgas acknowledges the challenges ahead, but emphasizes the need to bounce back to stay in contention for the 2024 Varsity Football title. "Going to UWC is not easy, considering factors like the weather and a two-hour flight," the coach said, referring to the logistical challenges. UWC drew their opening match against defending champions TUT, adding to the difficulty of the upcoming game. Despite these obstacles, NWU has been diligently analyzing UWC’s previous match to prepare. The coach highlighted the importance of addressing mistakes made in their first game without disrupting team communication. "It's a process we're going through. We need to be mindful not to break the communication from the back by rushing to make changes,” he said. “This cautious approach aims to rectify errors while maintaining team cohesion.” The coach also noted the distinct challenges faced by the defense compared to the frontline. "It's difficult for the defense to make mistakes, unlike the frontline when they miss chances to score," he explained. This underscores the critical role of defensive solidity in their strategy against UWC. The upcoming match is a crucial test for the Eagles as they look to recover from their opening round loss and remain as contenders in the competition. A strong performance in Cape Town against UWC will no doubt give them the confidence to build momentum.   Fixtures   HERE   Tickets   HERE

That guy was a very confident guy and he was fearless” added Nhlapo.   Only time will tell what VUT’s final fate will be, but being the only team representing Joburg this season, the men from the Vaal are promising to be a side to be keen on.   Fixtures   HERE Tickets   HERE     By: Mpendulo Letsoalo

  • ‘We are all captains,’ says DUT captain Xolani Mkhonza

DUT Men’s Football have made history as they have qualified for their first ever Varsity Men’s Football competition. Playing an important piece in this solved puzzle for the Durban based team is their captain, Xolani Mkhonza, the first captain to lead DUT into the men’s Varsity Diski tournament.  Responding to this achievement, Mkhonza expressed his excitement on what lies ahead, mentioning that the leadership role does not faze him as he believes in teamwork and a shared responsibility amongst the team.   “We are very excited to have the opportunity to play in the Varsity Football as I can say it's a dream come true. We have never stopped working hard and believing in ourselves that's why we are here today,” said Mkhonza.   “I believe in teamwork and I also believe that having each other's backs is what makes a team. Being a captain for me doesn't matter that much, so for me we are all captains.”   Despite being new to the competition the men from the east coast of Durban are already settling in and growing in confidence ahead of their debut season however, the captain has admitted that the traveling aspect may take a toll on the team as they are without a home game.   “I won't lie it (having no home game) is going to have an impact on us, especially traveling a lot can result in fatigue. But I hope and wish we can overcome all of that” he said   “Being considered as the first-timers or underdogs, everyone believes they will step over us so I think the pressure is more on them. There will be challenges but we hope we'll reach our goal of being in the finals” Mkhonza concluded.   Fixtures   HERE Tickets   HERE       By: Mpendulo Letsoalo.

  • Defending champs UWC to face TUT in the 2024 Varsity Football Women's final after dramatic semi-finals

A dramatic round 4 of the women's Varsity Football 2024 tournament saw UWC book themselves a spot in the final after an emphatic 5-0 victory over NWU and they will face the six times  champions TUT who needed penalties to advance. The Red Army defeated UJ 4-2 in a penalty shootout after their semi-final ended 1-1 at full time. The day also saw playoff wins for UP-Tuks and Wits.   NWU 0-5 UWC     UWC found themselves in another final, after picking up a clinical 5-0 victory over the NWU in the first 2024 Varsity Women’s Football semi-final at the TUT Stadium.  UWC made their intentions in the game clear from kick off, putting the NWU defence under pressure from all angles. The early attempts from UWC also saw one of them cannon off the crossbar, showing early cracks in the NWU defence who were forced deep in their half. The deadlock was however only broken in the 36th minute, where UWC’s Bongeka Gamede rifled in a stunning free kick into the back of the net, that came from a hand ball.  The lead was doubled a minute later with Ronnel Donnelly getting her sixth goal of the tournament, leading UWC to a two-goal deficit at the break.  The second half saw NWU exposed for their lack of depth, not showing much change in their approach to the game. UWC continued to control proceedings, moving the ball at free will and looked threatening with the set pieces. The ladies from the Western Cape eventually extended their lead in the 50th minute, when Chelsea Daniels nodded in from the far post to make it 3-0. UWC inflicted more pain on NWU, scoring a further two goals courtesy of Aakifah Adams and an unfortunate own goal from Kelebogile Makwela, with UWC clinching the first spot in the final with a 5-0 win.  Scorers: Bongeka Gamede, Ronnel Donnelly, Chelsea Daniels, Aakifah Adams, Kelebogile Galeboe (og).    FNB Player of the Match: Tiffany Kortjie (UWC).    NWU: Charlotte Karabo Tshili, Kelebogile Makwela, Hlalefang Moledi, Kelebogile Galeboe, Florah Khoza, Kgomotso Moabelo, Lerato Monate, Mpho Molwele, Precious Tsupane, Zanile Khoza, Rebaone Mojahi.    UWC: Thandeka Ngcobo, Unathi Simayile, Bongeka Gamede, Fikile Magama, Ember Edwards, Vonisiwe Faith Maswanganyi, Kearah Gentry, Akholiwe Matsotsi, Tiffany Kortjie, Chelsea Daniels, Ronnel Donnelly.    UJ 1-1 TUT (2-4) TUT booked their spot in the final, beating the UJ 4-2 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in the 90 minutes of play.  Although the two teams had to settle for a 0-0 scoreline at the break, both looked impressive with UJ enjoying the slight edge over TUT. UJ were however hit with a curve ball, when they lost influential player Shannon Macomo to a knee injury.  The absence of Macomo did not keep them down for long though as Gugu Dhlamini came close to stunning TUT, with an impressive strike from distance that hit the crossbar. At the break, both teams had to go find other ways with the score at 0-0.  The resumption of play saw the game remain at a fairly high tempo, with the crowd bringing the noise with every close scoring opportunity. TUT were however the first to put the ball in the net through Tshogofatso Motlogelwo, who stroked the ball in from close range to make it 1-0.  The joy was however short lived as UJ hit back 2 minutes later with Thato Mofolo scoring from an awkward angle to make it 1-1. That is how the match ended at the final whistle, with penalties having to separate the two teams.      Scorers:   UJ - Thato Mofolo  TUT - Tshogofatso Motlogelwa.    FNB Player of the Match: Sthembile Sandleni (UJ).    UJ: Lerato Lefa, Sbongakonke Mzobe, Gugu Dhlamini, Refilwe Maseko, Ayesha Moosa, Shannon Macomo (C), Sthembile Sandleni, Mihle Lumko, Thato Mofolo, Patience Sekhukhuni, Matshidiso Masebe.    TUT: Glanny Mafikeng, Dineo Sharol Ramaoka, Sibongile Ntoane, Mamikgase Senyatsi, Gift Makanya, Mokgaetji Ramanna, Tshogofatso Motlogelwa (C), Asanda Msuthu, Lindiwe Nkambule, Paballo Chela, Nelly Nhlapho.     UP-Tuks 6-0 CUT     The 2023 Varsity Women's Football semi-finalists UP-Tuks battled out with CUT this time in the 5th and 6th playoff encounter. Tuks had one task to rewrite the errors of group stages.   Maude Khumalo’s charges gained their momentum late in the half as they found it difficult to break the CUT defence. The Stripe Generation finally opened the scoring through their talisman S’bahle Ndlovu after Ntando Phahla delivered a through pass to her teammate who placed it at the bottom corner.  The Pretoria East side was not done as they doubled their lead five minutes later through Tshwarelo Setlhafuno after CUT failed to defend a corner kick and the ball fell on Setlhafuno boot and put in at the back of the net. The match headed to the interval with Tuks leading 2-0.  Tuks continued their party early in the second half with a goal two minutes in play courtesy of Phahla’s sensational free kick. Ndlovu and Phahla continued their riot on the CUT defence with pleasing moves that saw Ndlovu complete her brace as she scored Tuks’ third goal to lead 4-0.    Tuks substitute Rethabile Makhwela headed home a free header to register her name on the scoreboard to make it 5-0.   With three minutes left to play, Phahla perfectly guided the ball in the net for her second goal, earning player of the match in the process as Tuks walked away victorious with 6-0 win.     Scorers: UP-Tuks - S’Bahle Ndlovu (2), Tshwarelo Setlhafuno, Ntando Phahla (2), Rethabile Makhwela.    FNB Player of the Match: Ntando Phahla (UP-Tuks).    UP-Tuks: Kgothatso Manamela, Morongwa Manamela (C), Ntando Phahla, Zikhona Mgotywa, Zikhona Ngenelwa, Thando Khubeka, Tebogo Motale, Nonhlakanipho Lucy Filand, Tshwarelo Setlhafuno, Tiisang Leseyane, S’Bahle Ndlovu.    CUT: Malefa Mantso, Pontsho Mokgethi, Sesinyane Motlhale, Siyavuya Magoswana, Boitumelo Mrwarwaza, Keneilwe Nqai (C), Kefuwe Rampooana, Tebello Hashatsi, Lebohang Madiboho, Portia Sefatsa, Maleqhwa Mokoena.   CPUT 1-2 Wits     Wits secured seventh position in a hard fought 2-1 victory over CPUT when the two locked horns in 7/8 playoffs.   Despite the poor runs in the group stages which saw both teams failing to record victories, the match produced pleasing action and good football display.   The Witsies took the lead in the 27th minute through a brilliant strike from Thalente Ntamane from inside the box. The Johannesburg side quickly doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime through Sakhi Mnomiya who troubled the CPUT defence with her cheeky runs on wide flanks. Her brilliant strike on the edge of the box handing Wits a comfortable 2 nil lead at the interval.  The affair produced exciting drama after the break as CPUT returned on a high note. The Cape outfit immediately converted their first goal through a good finish inside the box by Sinothando Lirula.    Lirula brilliantly struck the ball and beat the keeper, Wits defender managed to clear from the goal line to keep the score at 2-1 in favor. The referee had her share of the attention from the fans, as she had awarded the goal but quickly changed her decision.   Wits failed to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul Mnomiya, who stepped up but failed to convert.   CPUT felt they were robbed of an equalizer, again Lirula striking the in the back of the net only for her boot collided with Wits defender but the referee called for head injury. Only 25 minutes into play Tuks were the first to show signs of desperate win, creating first clear cut chance of the day however Thando Khubeka failed to direct her shot in goal.   Tuks showed signs of poor defence which NWU failed to capitalize on. Zandile Khoza applied pressure on Tuks defence as they committed mistakes inside their box but that didn't result in a good outcome.   The North West side was not done as they almost took the lead again from Tuks error, goalkeeper Kgothatso Manamela failed to clear the ball as it fell again on Khoza’s boot but couldn’t connect well with the ball as her effort went wide as two went to the break 0-0.   Both sides came back from the break fired up, playing high press and keeping both defence busy. It was NWU who grabbed the lead 1-0 through Zandile Khoza’s perfectly executed penalty after 55 minutes after Tuks captain Morongwa Manamela handled the ball in the box which saw her side's knockout chances being dented.   Desperate for the win, Tuks introduced Thembelihle Masibi and pushed Ntando Phahla upfront to help in attack but the efforts were fruitless as the match ended with NWU walking away with all the points.     Scorers:  Zanile Khoza (NWU).    FNB Player of the Match: Florah Khoza (NWU).    UP-Tuks: Kgothatso Manamela, Morongwa Manamela (C), Ntando Phahla, Zikhona Mgotywa, Zikhona Ngenelwa, Ibanathi Msindo, Tebogo Motale, Thando Khubeka, Tshwarelo Setlhafuno, S’Bahle Ndlovu, Nonhlakanipho Lucy Filand.    NWU: Charlotte Karabo Tshili, Precious Tsupane, Palesa Mnguni, Hlalefang Moledi (C), Kelebogile Makwela, Florah Khoza, Lerato Monate, Kgomotso Moabelo, Mpho Molwele, Rebaone Mojahi, Zanile Khoza.       CPUT 0-2 UWC     Defending champions UWC took on CPUT in Cape derby looking for a second win of the tournament and pile up the pressure on log leaders UJ who beat them in round 1.  As expected, it was a one sided affair for the vast majority of play as CPUT had limited chances to test UWC defense. It did not take time for Thinasonke Mbuli’s troops to make their mark as they took the lead inside the first 10 minutes through the ever power hungry for goals Ronnel Donnelly who stepped with a cheeky piece of individual play to break the deadlock.   UWC maintained a slender 1-0 lead at the break, but they would look back and say it should have been more. The CPUT defender handled the ball inside her own box but the referee pointed for a free kick to UWC.   The defending champions came from the break fired up and kept asking questions. CPUT were under pressure but the defense remained calm and avoided a high scoring game.   Thembelihle Zulu and Vonisiwe Maswanganyi remained threats to CPUT exploiting the wide spaces. Donnelly and Chelsea Daniels were fed beautiful crosses but failed to convert.  In the last play of the game, UWC were awarded a corner. A huge mistake from goalkeeper Nonhle Ngema mishandled the ball and it ended up in her net after it touched UWC’s substitute Aakifah Adams, securing a 2-0 victory.    Scorers:  Ronnel Donnelly, Aakifah Adams (UWC).    FNB Player of the Match: Ronnel Donnelly (UWC).    CPUT: Nonhle Ngema, Mesuli Bhungalipheli, Buhle Zamangethe Zwane, Zinhle Hlela (C), Sinothando Lirula, Mosetsanagape Theodorah Leepile, Thandiswa Gwenteshe, Samkelisiwe Madela, Sinelisiwe Phumlomo, Anathi Mpama, Truddy Mzinyathi.    UWC: Thandeka Ngcobo (C), Unathi Simayile, Robyn Coetzee, Ember Edwards, Nabeelah Galant, Vonisiwe Faith Maswanganyi, Akholiwe Matsotsi, Kearah Gentry, Chelsea Daniels, Thembelihle Zulu, Ronnel Donnelly.     UJ 4-0 CUT     UJ put in an impressive second half performance to storm past the CUT 4-0 at the TUT Stadium.  In a game where UJ were favorites, it was no surprise to see the Orange Army dominate proceedings in the first half, controlling possession and playing much of the half in the CUT half. CUT shot stopper, Malefa Mantso who conceded 6 goals on Saturday evening was in fine form that kept her side in the contest for much of the first half.  The deadlock was however eventually broken, when Sibongakonke Mzobe broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time to put the dominant UJ 1-0 up at the break.  The second half brought much of the same, but the difference fell with the Orange Army scoring two quick goals through Sphokazi Ngwenya and Shannon Macomo to make it 3-0. Macomo went onto bag a brace and give UJ their fourth, through a stunning bit of footwork that saw her centrally positioned shot come off the upright and find its way into the net.   The final whistle eventually sounded, and it was the two time champions who walked away with 3 points.    Scorers:  Sbongakonke Mzobe, Sphokazi Ngwenya, Shannon Macomo (2) (UJ).    FNB Player of the Match: Shannon Macomo (UJ)    UJ: Lungile Khumalo, Atlegang Mogale, Sbongakonke Mzobe, Monosi Ngambu, Sphokazi Ngwenya, Shannon Macomo (C), Sthembile Sandleni, Mihle Lumko, Sthembile Msomi, Cinderella Sandra Mibe, Matshidiso Masebe.    CUT: Malefa Mantso, Pontsho Mokgethi, Siyavuya Magoswana, Dimpho Lehasa, Disebo Lydia Mahlonoko, Ipeleng Motlhale, Maleqhwa Mokoena, Lebohang Madiboho, Kefuwe Rampooana, Keneilwe Nqai (C), Nqabakazi Hlatshwayo.   TUT 6-0 Wits     TUT did not give Wits space to breath, as they managed to beat the ladies from Johannesburg 6-0 at the TUT Stadium.  The first half saw TUT play the better football throughout against a nervy Wits team that struggled to string a few passes together consistently. Wits were often forced to play in their own half, making it difficult to create game changing opportunities in front of goal.  TUT’s efforts were however rewarded in the 12th minute, when Sibongile Ntoane took a strike from outside the Wits 18-yard area to make it 1-0. The Red Army of TUT made it 2-0 in the 30th minute, when Ntoane grabbed her brace through an astonishing shot once again from outside the Wits box. At the break it was Wits licking their wounds, while the Red Army were on cloud 9 with their 2-0 lead.  The return of play saw a TUT show, with Wits often looking to just do damage control rather than making an impact on the game.  The Red Army managed to shift a further 4 goals in the half, further tainting a chance for Wits coming out of the game with something. The Tshwane ladies’ goals came courtesy of Tshogofatso Motlogelwa, Gift Makanya, Naledi Thakanyane, and Orapeleng Ndlovu as they walked away with the maximum points.    Scorers:  Sibongile Ntoane (2), Tshogofatso Motlogelwa, Gift Makanya, Naledi Thakanyane, Orapeleng Ndlovu (TUT).    FNB Player of the Match: Gift Makanya (TUT).    TUT: Glanny Mafikeng, Dineo Sharol Ramaoka, Sibongile Ntoane, Mamikgase Senyatsi, Gift Makanya, Mokgaetji Ramanna, Tshogofatso Motlogelwa (C), Asanda Msuthu, Lindiwe Nkambule, Paballo Chela, Nelly Nhlapho .    Wits: Boitumelo Matua, Ayanda Mnyembane, Sizakele Ndlovu, Thalente Ntamane, Sakhi Mnomiya, Lusanda Nyathi, Mavis Thato Machweu, Imaan Parker, Lesego Masemola, Magogodi Litlhakanyane, Bacebile Ngema.       Fixtures   HERE      Tickets   HERE

  • UFS stun NWU away and UP-Tuks make winning return to Varsity Football in Round 1

With round one of the 2024 Varsity Men’s Football competition kicking off on Thursday 25 July, teams picked up where they left off with last season's entertainment. UFS was ruthless in their first match against NWU while UP-Tuks snatched a late winner at home to give their fans something to look forward to in the campaign.    NWU 1-3 UFS     In a thrilling encounter, UFS clinched maximum points with a decisive 3-1 victory over NWU in an away match.  The game commenced with a high tempo, and UFS quickly demonstrated their intent. In the 24th minute, a corner kick delivered a perfect opportunity for the Kovsies as Obakeng Seeikoei rose above the NWU defenders to deliver a powerful header into the back of the net, giving the visitors an early lead. NWU 0-1 UFS.  As the first half progressed, NWU struggled to find their rhythm and paid the price for a defensive error just before halftime. In the 43rd minute, a miscalculated clearance by an NWU defender allowed UFS captain Boy Rantsoti to seize the opportunity. Rantsoti skillfully maneuvered past the remaining defenders and slotted the ball in the back of the net to extend UFS's lead, bringing the halftime score to NWU 0-2 UFS.  The second half saw NWU come out with renewed determination, pushing hard to overturn the deficit. Their efforts paid off in the 54th minute when they were awarded a penalty after a UFS player handled the ball in the penalty box. Reatlegile Kgosithebe, stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, narrowing the gap to NWU 1-2 UFS.  However, UFS quickly regained their composure and continued to apply pressure. In the 83rd minute, they were awarded a penalty following a rash tackle by an NWU defender. Rantsoti took responsibility and calmly placed the ball into the net, securing his second goal of the match.  Despite NWU's spirited attempts to mount a comeback, UFS held firm and maintained their lead until the final whistle.    Scorers:   NWU  - Reatlegile Kgosithebe.   UFS – Obakeng Seekoei, Boy Rantsoti (2).    FNB Player of the Match:  Jarome Jansen UFS)    NWU: Kamogelo Matane, Olebogeng Moeti (C), Sousa Mathe, Lucas Seromo, Lucky Letwaba, Thapelo Perseverence Letsholonyane, Pascual Tivane, Thabang Majoro, Smanga Twala, Xolani Masethi, Reatlegile Kgosithebe.    UFS: Boy Rantsoti (C), Omphemetse Matlhogonolo Athibeng, Samkelo Nakedi, Jarome Jansen, Moeti Mofokeng, Arlonso Diedricks, Iviwe Dyabuza, Sandile Mhlanga, Thandolwethu Khoza, Obakeng Seekoei, Tisetso Daniel Seodinyane.     CUT 0-0 DUT     CUT and DUT shared the spoils in Bloemfontein on Thursday night after playing to a 0-0 at the CUT Stadium in round one of the 2024 Varsity Men’s Football.  The visitors were the first to have a crack on goal, and it was as soon as the second minute, however, the shot hit the crossbar. It was a nervous start for both teams in the opening exchanges, but DUT were looking quite dangerous on the counter-attack.  The field seemed to be quite tricky to play on as there was a lot of slipping by players from both teams, and this probably affected the quality of the finishing, especially on the side of the hosts, who certainly created a lot of good chances.  At about the half hour mark CUT upped the tempo of the game, while the thin and cold Bloemfontein air could have been taking its toll on the team from the East Coast. This allowed CUT to be more dangerous on the attack, but a lack of finish saw the game deadlocked at 0-0 at the interval.  CUT missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 61st minute of the game when DUT conceded a penalty for a foul in the box. The CUT captain and centre back Simo Ndlovu stepped up to the mark for the shot, but the staggered run up did not deceive the DUT goalkeeper Philasanda Mthembu who pulled off a brilliant save.  This was enough for the first timers in Varsity Men’s Football to force a goalless draw and head back to Durban with a point in the bag.     FNB Player of the Match: Pogisho Dikole (CUT)    CUT: Kananelo Sehebeng, Ramokhafeng Montsi, Jeffrey Mokoena, Alwande Sibiya, Simo Ndlovu (C), Tiisetso Mpholoana, Pogisho Dikole, Mzwakhe Shabalala, Mthabiseni Mlambo, Oratile Mothibedi, Lehlohonolo Nkaekae.    DUT: Philasande Mthembu, Xolani Mkhonza (C), Sifundo Ngema, Theo Nzama, Mlulamisi Khowa, Awande Ngidi, Thobani Jwara, Likho James, Khulekani Nxumalo, Nhlakanipho Ngwenya, Amahle Mkhize.     UP TUKS 1-0 VUT     UP-Tuks defeated VUT 1-0 in their opening match of the 2024 Varsity Men’s Football thanks to Raymond Matlamela’s strike late in the 85th minute. UP-Tuks welcomed VUT in their first encounter since their return to Varsity Football.   AmaTuks welcomed back a number of spectators as they took on VUT in the first round of the campaign. The home side enjoyed much of the possession in the opening half. Nicholas Stothard’s troops came close to opening the scoring when attacker Matome Rangata was fed a through ball only for him to misguide his first touch resulting in the VUT keeper rescuing his side.   The visitors absorbed the pressure and relied on their pacey wingers for counter attack. Sbusiso Makondo’s charges though were not given much space as they only threatened Tuks on one occasion and their efforts went wide with the game remaining goalless at the break.    AmaTuks intensified their attack in the second half and nearly got on the score sheet when Rangata was denied by an upright. Continued to pose a threat at VUT Rangata slotted in a dangerous cross however VUT responded to the task.   Tuks introduced striker Ntokozo Madela who fed Mnqobi Mkhize, however the second striker failed to convert.   Tuks’ efforts were finally rewarded with Raymond Matlamela tapping in a short cross to hand Tuks the lead in the dying stages of the game to make it 1-0 in the 85th minute to give Tuks  all three points.    Scorers:   UP-Tuks – Raymond Matlamela    FNB Player of the Match:  Raymond Matlamela (UP-Tuks).    UP-Tuks: Jayden Van Der Walt, Khotatso Balepile, Nkosana Shabalala, Edward Rankwe, Tshepiso Mahlangu (C), Paballo Mamabolo, Camagu Mdevulana, Matome Rangata, Raymond Tshwane Matlamela, Joshua Wood, Mnqobi Mkhize.      VUT: Tebogo Mosia, Gontse Kole, Kamohelo Ramalefane, Perceverance Mashabane, Kgotso Nhlapo (C), Lehlohonolo Ncambe, Marumo Lekoloane, Lucky Raphala, Thabiso Singo, Kgahlisho Kgomoeswana, Sibusiso Baloyi.       TUT 1-1 UWC     Defending champions TUT welcomed the UWC to the capital on a cold and chilly Thursday evening for the teams’ first match of the 2024 Varsity Men’s Football with the home side expecting a victory.   TUT started the quicker out of the blocks, controlling the game early on and applying a high press on their opposition, somewhat shocking the visitors.  The home side’s pressure paid off when TUT’s captain Thuso Mlamla danced his way into the penalty area and was ultimately fouled. Anda Yamile converted the penalty giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.   The Red Army, had wind in their sails and went for the jugular, however, UWC had other ideas and caught them on the counter after a long ball played behind the home sides’ defense, finding Ranieri Salvini, with an immaculate first touch to set himself up, however, the defender was flat-footed and fouled Salvini, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot.   The long-trusted lieutenant, Leandro de Souza stepped up, puffed out his cheeks and converted the penalty to make it 1-1. TUT were not deterred by the goal conceded, they pushed on trying to take the lead, but the visitors remained resolute, it went to the halftime break at a stalemate.   UWC Assistant Coach, Msekeli Mvalo made a substitution immediately after the break trying to reinforce his midfield to contain the opposition, and it worked, with the visitors remaining tight at the back.  The match ended with the two sides sharing one point each.  Scorers:   TUT – Anda Yamile  UWC - Leandro De Sousa    FNB Player of the Match: Thuso Mlamla (TUT)    TUT: Luyanda Mandindi, Precious Mohale, Katlego Motlhale, Mnqobi Khumalo, Karabo Rangata, Anda Yamile, Thuso Mlamla (C), Menzukuthula Ntshangase, Swazi Kupa, Tebatso Manyane, Lesedi Khosi.    UWC: Leathan Croats, Damian Overmeyer (C), Somila Kostile, Jadan Zeeman, Shuaib Martin, Siyanda Mabadi, Arnold Dube, Leandro De Sousa, Ranieri Salvini, Qhayisa Lekata, Vuyani Ncontsa.        Fixtures   HERE   Tickets   HERE

  • Goals galore in Varsity Football Women round 2 as UWC hammer CUT and big wins for UJ and Tuks

Round 2 of the 2024 Women’s Varsity Football tournament at TUT Stadium has once again delivered spectacular performances that saw defending champions UWC hammered CUT 6-1 restoring their dignity after losing to UJ in round 1, while UJ made it two from two, putting four goals past CPUT. It was a triumph for NWU and UP-Tuks as well.      UJ 4-0 CPUT     Fired up UJ locked horns with CPUT on a quest for another victory after edging defending champions UWC in round 1.   UJ made an early statement causing problems for the CPUT defence. The Johannesburg side effort immediately paid off as they took the 1-0 lead in just 20 minutes through Bryden Mokobi .   A perfectly executed goal, a move started by Ayesha Moosa getting past two players and providing a through ball to Thato Mofolo who then cut it back in the box for Refilwe Maseko. Maseko made no mistake and laid it off for Mokobi who perfectly guided it in the back of the net.    It didn't take long as UJ doubled their lead through Maseko. A dangerous delivery from Moosa to Maseko in the right space as it hits her hip and goes in the bottom corner for UJ's second goal. UJ had a chance to extend their lead in the stroke of halftime as they were awarded a penalty for a push in the box, Gugu Dhlamini confidently stepped up but failed to convert. UJ took a 2-0 lead at the break.   UJ picked up where they left in the first half as they returned from the break with back to back goals. Mokobi completed her brace from the penalty spot after CPUT was penalised for a hand ball.   Dhlamini cross fell on substitute Sphokazi Ngwenya who fed Thato Mogolo for UJ’s fourth goal and that saw UJ take a comfortable win over the Cape based team.     Scorers:  Bryden Mokobi (2), Refilwe Maseko, Thato Mofolo.    FNB Player of the Match: Ayesha Moosa (UJ)    UJ: Lerato Lefa, Gugu Dhlamini, Refilwe Maseko (C) Ayesha Moosa, Shannon Macomo, Sthembile Msomi, Bryden Mokobi, Thato Mofolo, Cinderella Sandra Mibe, Patience Sekhukhuni, Elizabeth Mazivise.    CPUT: Nonhle Ngema, Mesuli Bhungalipheli (C), Thandiswa Gwenteshe, Fumane Moeti, Sinothando Lirula, Samkelisiwe Madela, Mosetsanagape Theodorah Leepile, Truddy Mzinyathi, Pumelela Mtongana, Anathi Mpama, Sinelisiwe Phumlomo.      NWU 2-1 TUT     The hosts TUT took on NWU in the second round of the Varsity Women’s Football in search of their second victory. The Pretoria West outfit were highly motivated going into this encounter after beating rivals Tuks 2-1 in round 1.  TUT enjoyed much of the possession in the opening exchanges, but the NWU remained solid in defence.   With much hunger for the opener in front of home fans, TUT committed more numbers up front as a result, NWU goalkeeper Charlotte Tshili was forced to make two crucial saves to keep her side in contention.  Alfa Dolopi’s charges absorbed the pressure and waited for the right moment to press. Deadly on the counter, NWU got themselves a corner on the stroke of halftime which resulted in a goal courtesy of Mpho Molwele to take a slender 1-0 lead at the interval.   TUT were the first to make a mark at the start of the second half as they found an equaliser through Sibongile Ntoane after NWU failed to clear a dangerous corner kick delivery from Tshegofatso Motlogelwa.   The Eagles kept knocking with their high tempo play, the reward came late in the dying minutes of the game. TUT failed to clear their lines from a corner and Rebaone Mojahi buried a rebound to seal the victory for NWU and six points in the bag.     Scorers:     NWU : Mpho Molwele, Rebaone Mojahi.  TUT : Sibongile Ntoane.    FNB Player of the Match: Mpho Molwele (NWU).    NWU: Charlotte Karabo Tshili, Precious Tsupane, Palesa Mnguni, Hlalefang Moledi (C), Kelebogile Makwela, Florah Khoza, Lerato Monate, Kgomotso Moabelo, Mpho Molwele, Rebaone Mojahi, Zanile Khoza.    TUT: Retshepaone Valencia Ntwayagae, Glanny Mafikeng, Dineo Sharol Ramaoka, Sibongile Ntoane, Mamikgase Senyatsi, Gift Makanya, Mokgaetji Ramanna, Tshogofatso Motlogelwa (C), Ogone Motshabi, Lindiwe Nkambule, Paballo Chela.       CUT 1-6 UWC   UWC were in fine form as they made light work of the CUT, with a 6-1 victory in the second round of group stage matches of the Varsity Women’s Football tournament at the TUT stadium.  It took just three minutes for UWC to send their supporters into a frenzy, when forward Ronnel Donnelly pressed and forced a mistake from CUT before firing into the net for the first goal of the game.   Seven minutes later, it was the highly rated Chelsea Daniels who then got her name on the scoresheet, unleashing a scorching shot from distance to make it 2-0 to UWC. It then took another eight minutes for Daniels to claim her brace, this time around scoring from the penalty spot after a foul in the CUT box to make it 3-0.  CUT did manage to register a goal of their own from the penalty spot, with captain Keneilwe Nqai neatly placing her attempt in the bottom right corner, heading to the break with UWC leading by 3-1.  The second half saw UWC going for the kill, adding a further three goals to their tally. The goals came courtesy of Donnelly who registered her brace, Thembelihle Zulu, with Daniels clinching the first tournament hat-trick as Cape Town restored their dignity.       Scorers:     CUT  - Keneilwe Nqai.  UWC  - Ronnel Donnelly (2), Chelsea Daniels (3), Thembelihle Zulu.    FNB Player of the Match: Ronnel Donnelly (UWC).    CUT: Malefa Mantso, Pontsho Mokgethi, Siyavuya Magoswana, Sesinyane Motlhale, Dimpho Lehasa, Ipeleng Motlhale, Keneilwe Nqai (C), Kefuwe Rampooana, Lebohang Madiboho, Maleqhwa Mokoena, Tebello Hashatsi.    UWC: Thandeka Ngcobo, Unathi Simayile, Robyn Coetzee, Ember Edwards, Nabeelah Galant, Vonisiwe Faith Maswanganyi, Akholiwe Matsotsi, Kearah Gentry, Chelsea Daniels, Thembelihle Zulu, Ronnel Donnelly.     UP-Tuks 3-0 Wits     UP-Tuks claimed the Juskei Derby bragging rights and moved a step closer to qualifying for the next round of the Varsity Women’s Football tournament, as they managed to defeat Wits 3-0 at the TUT stadium.  It was a somewhat do-or-die clash between the two Gauteng rivals, and it took just 14 minutes for UP-Tuks to trouble the scorers. The goal came off a handling mistake from Wits goalkeeper, Nthabiseng Ramaisa, who failed to hold onto a long range UP-Tuks effort that striker Sbahle Ndlovu managed to nod in.  The rest of the half saw a tightly contested affair, with UP-Tuks looking threatening every time they head forward. The Stripe Generation hea to the half time break with a 1-0 lead.  The second half saw the Witsies look for a way back in the game, but UP-Tuks continued to control the game, stringing passes well in the Wits half.  Ramaisa was in fine form for much of the game in between the sticks but she was eventually beaten by an unfortunate own goal from defender Magogodi Litlhakanyane in the 64th minute. With a 2-0 lead, UP-Tuks looked home and dry, but the goals didn't stop there, with Ibanathi Msindo scoring a potential goal of the tournament from outside the box to seal a 3-0 win.      Scorers:  S’Bahle Ndlovu, Magogodi Litlhakanyane (OG) (UP-Tuks), Ibanathi Msindo.    FNB Player of the Match: S’Bahle Ndlovu (UP-Tuks).    UP-Tuks: Kgothatso Manamela, Morongwa Manamela (C), Ntando Phahla, Zikhona Mgotywa, Zikhona Ngenelwa, Ibanathi Msindo, Thando Khubeka, Nonhlakanipho Lucy Filand, Tiisang Leseyane, Thembelihle Masibi, S’Bahle Ndlovu.    Wits: Nthabiseng Ramaisa, Ayanda Mnyembane (C), Sizakele Ndlovu, Thalente Ntamane, Sakhi Mnomiya, Lusanda Nyathi, Mavis Thato Machweu, Imaan Parker, Lesego Masemola, Magogodi Litlhakanyane, Bacebile Ngema.     Fixtures   HERE     Tickets   HERE
