Wits looking for first win at home against UL in round 2

Although their opening match of the 2026 Varsity Football campaign ended in a goalless draw, there were plenty of positives for Wits to take into their next clash against the University of Limpopo (UL) on 14 August.

The Educated Footballers will return to home soil when they face this Friday, with Wits aiming to turn their home advantage into a positive result. UL, meanwhile, will be determined to bounce back after suffering a 2-0 defeat to DUT in their opening match on 7 August.

Wits captain, Kgwadi Molepo believes a win will boost his side’s confidence while showing what is to come in the tournament, sure that their 0-0 draw against UWC on 7 August was just an icebreaker.

“Playing at home gives us a different kind of energy, especially when we have our supporters behind us. We want to make most of that advantage and give them something to be proud of,” said Molepo.

“We know UL will be a difficult opponent in terms of how they approach games. We have to approach the game with the right mentality and respect them in the 90 minutes. We have a lot of belief in this group and the work we’ve put in during training and preparations have been good.”

Molepo reflected on the previous fixture against UWC, where he hopes lessons learnt will be applied in their upcoming clash.

“It was a good and competitive game. It was important for us to stay disciplined and show character throughout the match because we had chances in the first half. In the second half, UWC had the upper hand. 

“Looking at the game, we can improve on our decision-making and be more clinical in our final third. It was a good learning experience, and I think it gave us confidence because we know there is still another level we can reach,” he concluded.

The home side takes UL at Wits Stadium at 18:30.
