UWC's Sera Ntuku-Ntuku announces himself on Varsity Football stage

There was plenty of quality on display when the University of the Western Cape (UWC) faced Wits University in their opening Varsity Football match, but one player who stood out was debutant Sesethu “Sera” Ntuku-Ntuku.

The Nyanga-born midfielder showed maturity beyond his years as he impressed with his runs, passing, marking and overall understanding of the game. Despite making his first appearance in the tournament, Sera looked comfortable on the big stage and showed little sign of being overwhelmed by the occasion.

His confidence and composure were particularly noticeable in the way he communicated with his teammates and remained involved throughout the match. At times, he appeared as though he had been part of the Varsity Football environment for years rather than making his debut.

For UWC, the performance could be an early indication that they have a player capable of making a significant impact as the tournament progresses. With more game time and experience, Ntuku-Ntuku could develop into one of the players to watch in this year's competition.

The young player admitted that he was unsure what to expect before walking onto the field for his first Varsity Football match.

“It is my first game of this tournament, and I was a bit nervous. This is a tournament that is big, respected and loved by the fans. As a debutant, I had to show that I can do this,” he said.

Those nerves, however, did not appear to affect his performance. Ntuku-Ntuku said he was pleased with how he handled the occasion and believes the experience has prepared him for what lies ahead.

“It was not going to be easy, and it won't be easy going forward. But I now know what to expect. The competition is tough among the players,” he said.

“The Wits players showed that there is no home advantage if you play your football. That's one thing that I learned.”

Ntuku believes the experience has made him even more determined to improve and contribute to UWC's campaign.

He also has faith in the team's technical staff, who he believes have the experience required to guide the squad through the demanding tournament.

“Our weapon is our technical team led by coach Vieira (Lwando Mdleleni). They have been there and done that. They have won the cup a couple of times. We are now ready for the next game,” he said.
