UJ’s defensive anchor Yasidu Lifa sets sights on the stars

He may currently be anchoring the backline in South Africa’s premier student football tournament, but UJ defender and second-year Sports Management student Yasidu Lifa have ambitions that extend far beyond Varsity Football, with his sights firmly set on football’s grandest stage - the UEFA Champions League.

The 21-year-old vice-captain has quickly established himself as an irreplaceable asset for head coach Karabo Mogudi since his debut in 2025. Playing with the calm authority of a seasoned veteran, Lifa credits his smooth transition to strong roots and familiar faces.

"It was easy for me to settle quickly when I joined UJ in my first year because I knew some of the players from my township, Kagiso," said Lifa.

"They welcomed me with open arms and made sure we played our normal football without feeling intimidated."

Born in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, before moving to Johannesburg’s West Rand due to his father's work, Lifa began his football journey at just five years old.

Moulded by the aggressive, uncompromising approach of legendary defenders such as Manchester United icon Nemanja Vidić and Kaizer Chiefs great Willard Katsande, Lifa has developed into a formidable presence at the back. His defensive strength, tenacity and ability to read the game have been evident across Varsity Football, the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League and the USSA Championships.

Off the pitch, Lifa is reserved and soft-spoken – a stark contrast to the fierce, uncompromising leader who dominates opposition attackers on matchdays. Before every kick-off, he grounds himself through faith.

"My routine ritual is praying before stepping onto the field," he reveals.

"It gives me the courage to do what I do best.

“Varsity Football opens doors, so many players have been scouted into the elite Premier Soccer League (PSL) and second-tier divisions through this platform. My dream is to play for one of the Soweto giants - Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates - and ultimately make the leap to Europe."
