NWU will be looking to return to winning ways when they face TUT in their round five Varsity Football 2025 encounter at the NWU Mahikeng Stadium. The Eagles come into the clash sitting in fifth spot on the log with just two goals scored in their opening four matches, a statistic that coach Nkululeko Malgas acknowledges is a concern despite his side’s attacking intent.

“It is a concern not converting, partly because I am happy with the number of chances that we are creating. In our last two matches against UP Tuks and UFS, both of their goalkeepers were awarded Man of the Match accolades. We need to convert the scoring chances we are creating,” Malgas said.

“We need to repay our loyal supporters, as I am sure they’ll come in more numbers. UP Tuks at least created a few chances, but Kovsies couldn’t bother us, hence they didn’t even get a corner.”

TUT, who are traditionally strong and physical, present another tough challenge. However, NWU will draw confidence from their previous meeting in Mahikeng.

“If you remember the last time they visited us last season, we won. I am sure they will come like a wounded lion, seeing their form in this year’s edition. We will be tested, and I can assure you that we will be equal to the task,” he said.

With home advantage and the desire to improve in front of goal, NWU will aim to make a statement against TUT and climb the Varsity Football table. Kick-off is set for Thursday evening at the NWU Mahikeng Stadium.
