FNB Players That Impressed in Varsity Football Round 4

UJ continue to set the pace in Varsity Football, maintaining their perfect record with four wins from four, while remaining unbeaten and yet to concede a goal. The Orange Army also secured their place in the semi-finals after dominating the Johannesburg derby, defeating Wits 2-0 away from home. Defending champions UFS finally opened their winning account with a spirited 2-1 comeback victory over UL at Oscar Mpetha Stadium. Meanwhile, UP-Tuks collected maximum points at Harry Gwala Stadium, cruising to a 3-0 win over DUT. UWC also celebrated a breakthrough victory on home soil, edging TUT 3-2 in a thrilling encounter as the tournament continues to heat up.

Akani Rathokoa (TUT)

TUT winger Akani Rathokoa was the standout player of the match. He displayed impressive maturity and confidence on the ball and was never afraid to take on defenders. His ability to recognise when to open up space for his teammates was particularly impressive, while his understanding with the players around him was clear. On another day, Rathokoa could easily have walked away with the Man of the Match award.

Mxolisi Mthiya (Wits)

While he couldn't put the ball in the net for Wits against UJ, he was still visible enough to be an option for a shot on target. His maturity in the forward position is his strength, and he is not one of the leading goal scorers in the competition for nothing.

Risen Albert (UP-Tuks)

Risen Albert was a constant threat for UP-Tuks, producing a lively and dangerous display on the wing in their 3-0 victory over DUT. The winger repeatedly troubled the DUT defence with his pace, movement and direct attacking approach, stretching the opposition and creating problems whenever he got on the ball. Albert looked confident taking on defenders and was a key outlet for Tuks as they pushed forward. His ability to exploit spaces and drive into the final third kept the DUT backline under pressure throughout the encounter. It was a performance that highlighted Albert’s attacking quality and his potential to become an influential figure for UP-Tuks as the Varsity Football tournament progresses.

Mosa Mabitsela (UL)

Despite the difficult nature of the game and the final 2-1 defeat, he continued to show determination, resilience and commitment throughout the match. He worked hard to keep his team in the game and repeatedly tried to prevent UFS from creating further scoring opportunities.
