FNB Players That Impressed in Varsity Football Round 1

The opening round of the 2026 Varsity Football campaign delivered plenty of drama, with UP-Tuks stealing the headlines after staging a remarkable comeback to defeat defending champions UFS 4-2 at Shimla Park in Bloemfontein. There was also a winning start for DUT, who made home advantage count at Oscar Mpetha Stadium with a 2-0 triumph over UL to collect maximum points. In the Gauteng derby, UJ emerged victorious against TUT, securing a narrow 1-0 win to claim bragging rights in the provincial showdown. Meanwhile, UWC and Wits could not be separated at the UWC Stadium, with the two sides sharing the points after playing to a goalless draw.

Here are the players who made the biggest impact in their respective matches.

Yasidu Lifa (UJ)

Yasidu Lifa proved why he was appointed the captain of the UJ team, providing solid defense for the Orange Army. His no-nonsense but clean tackles and clearances at the back ensured that the TUT forwards find no opportunity to put UJ in trouble throughout the 90 minutes, earning him the FNB Player of the Match award at the end of the game.

Simon Katlego Maleba (UL)

Simon Maleba stood out for his energy and flair on UL’s right wing. The Honours in Education student has been with UL since 2021 and has experienced both relegation and promotion. Despite the defeat, Maleba remains confident that UL can improve, admitting they may have underestimated DUT. Known by the nickname “Traoré”, Maleba earned the moniker from his coach because of his impressive fitness, drawing comparisons to Spanish winger Adama Traoré.’

Matome Rangata (UP-Tuks)

Matome Rangata stood out for UP-Tuks with his creativity and attacking influence. The midfielder played a key role in the opening goal, producing a superb pass to unlock the UFS defence, before showing his composure to capitalise on a defensive error and score Tuks’ equaliser in the second half. His ability to create chances and make an impact in decisive moments was crucial to Tuks’ comeback victory.

Reddel Duh (Wits)

Reddel Duh was the standout performer for Wits, playing a decisive role in securing the goalless draw. The goalkeeper remained composed under late pressure from UWC and produced two excellent saves when the hosts looked most likely to score. His performance ensured Wits held on for a valuable point in a tightly contested opening fixture.
