The much-anticipated Varsity Football 2025 Round 1 has concluded with impressive results. Wits kicked off their campaign strongly, securing a 4-1 victory over CUT at Wits Stadium. TUT also started on a high note, edging out DUT 1-0. Meanwhile, two matches ended in draws, with UJ and NWU, as well as UP-Tuks and UFS, sharing the points.

Tebogo Masemola - (Wits Men’s Football)
The most impactful player on the pitch was no doubt Tebogo Masemola. Masemola was influential in the game, winning the ball side-to-side and creating the scoring chances and ending up scoring the opening goal. His goal-scoring ability and vision on the field were key to Wits' success on the night.

Damian Overmeyer - (UP-Tuks Men’s Football)
Varsity Football 2024 winner Damian Overmeyer produced an outstanding shift on his debut for Tuks. The centre-back was solid in defence and made sure nothing gets past his keeper. Overmeyer marshalled his defence managed to set up his team’s attack with deceiving passes.
“Good performance but I must say we are disappointed with the results with the chances we got we felt we should’ve come out with the win. We keep the clean sheet at back to give the guys upfront more confidence to attack and score. We work on these drills in training and all I can do is to try my best to execute it on the pitch.”

Sinenhlanhla Mkhonza and Teboho Makhalanyane – (UJ Men’s Football)
From his skilful manoeuvres to holding down the UJ midfield, Sinenhlanhla Mkhonza gave UJ a boost in the middle of the park against NWU in the opening clash. Together with Teboho Makhalanyane, the two launched lethal attacks into the NWU half as Makhalanyane whipped good free kicks and crosses from the left wing into the opposition box in the two halves of the match.
“I’m happy with my performance in the opening match and walking away with the FNB Player of the Match award, though we did not win the game. I pushed myself to do better for the most part of the game, but going forward I can do better than today,” said Mkhonza.

Sekwanele Mtolo – (DUT Men’s Football)
The standout player was DUT goalkeeper Sekwanele Mtolo, who not only saved a penalty but also played a crucial role in organizing his team from the back. Despite his team's loss, Mtolo’s performance was exceptional and truly impressive.
