- Empowering Youth through Project Playground
NEXT PREVIOUS CSI 21 Aug 2024 UWC Football Club’s ShowUs Initiative: Empowering Youth through Project Playground The University of the Western Cape (UWC) Football Club is stepping up to the challenge with its participation in the ShowUs campaign, an inspiring initiative that calls on universities across South Africa to contribute to meaningful change in their communities. ShowUs is a call to action, a movement designed to harness the power of varsity sports teams to make a real difference in society. The ShowUs campaign provides an incredible opportunity for varsity football teams to adopt community programs, engage with them, and share their impact on a broader platform. The concept is simple: each team selects a program to support, whether it's an existing initiative or a newly created one, and actively participates through volunteering, fundraising, or other forms of support. By documenting their involvement through photos, videos, and social media posts, teams not only raise awareness but also inspire others to join the cause. The underlying message is powerful: if each one of us changes just one thing, we have the power to ignite widespread change. UWC’s Partnership with Project Playground In response to the ShowUs challenge, UWC Football Club has chosen to partner with Project Playground (PPG), a foundation dedicated to improving the life opportunities of vulnerable children and youth. PPG operates with the mission of enhancing the future prospects of these young individuals through capacity-building, educational activities, and individual support. By doing so, PPG aims to help these children and youth gain self-esteem, develop faith in their futures, and acquire the tools they need to break free from the cycle of exclusion. Through this partnership, UWC Football Club members will not only act as mentors and role models but also use football as a means to teach valuable life lessons and foster teamwork among the youth. The club will also work to raise funds for PPG, with donations directly supporting the expansion of the foundation’s programs and increasing their impact. When asked why UWC Football Club chose to work with PPG, a spokesperson from the club shared, "We were drawn to Project Playground because of its unwavering commitment to youth empowerment. Our values as a club align with their innovative approach to addressing the socio-economic challenges that our communities face. We believe that by partnering with PPG, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of young people, providing them with the support and inspiration they need to overcome adversity." The funds raised by UWC Football Club will have a significant impact on Project Playground’s ability to reach more beneficiaries and enhance its programs. These donations will allow PPG to provide additional resources to support the well-being of the children and youth under its care, ultimately helping them build a brighter future. By working together with Project Playground, they are not only making a difference in their community but also setting an example for others to follow. As the ShowUs campaign gains momentum, it’s clear that when universities and their sports teams unite for a cause, they can create lasting, positive change. - Kovsie Football Show Us campaign
NEXT PREVIOUS CSI 21 Aug 2024 Kovsie Football Teams Up with UFS Protection Services to Combat Violent Crimes as a part of their ShowUs initiative In a bold move against violent crimes, KovsieFootball joined forces with UFS Protection Services in 2023 to address the increasing concerns about student safety on campus and across the country. This partnership seeks not only to protect students but also to empower them with the knowledge and tools necessary to stay safe. The primary goal of the collaboration is education. KovsieFootball aims to expose students to the realities of violent crime, helping them understand the risks and equipping them with practical strategies to make informed decisions regarding their safety and well-being. According to KovsieFootball, “Our purpose is to educate students about violent crime so they can make good decisions and protect themselves.” UFS Protection Services shares a similar approach:“We look to educate to mitigate,” explains a spokesperson from the department. “By teaching students about the types of violent crimes that affect them—such as armed robbery, assault, and grievous bodily harm (GBH)—we aim to reduce their chances of becoming victims. We provide critical statistics and insights into the frequency of these crimes, helping students stay aware and vigilant.” Education is a key part of the strategy, with a focus on: · The nature and causes of violent crimes that students may encounter in their environment. · The legal definitions and the justice system’s response to such crimes, giving students a clearer understanding of how the law works and their rights within it. · By raising awareness, the campaign hopes to create a safer campus environment, with students playing an active role in preventing violent incidents and protecting themselves. KovsieFootball and UFS Protection Services believe that sport not only has the power to change lives but also to sustain them. The values of sportsmanship and fair play are seen as essential in promoting peace on campus. “We believe peace is embedded in the values of sport,” says a KovsieFootball representative. “That’s why we encourage student involvement in sports. Through teamwork and fair play, we aim to instill values that contribute to the overall well-being and safety of our campus.” Through this campaign, the university aims to raise awareness about violent crimes and promote fairness, urging society and the legal system to ensure that justice is served. By supporting victims and ensuring their voices are heard, the initiative works to foster reconciliation and healing within the UFS community. The campaign is also committed to offering support to students, UFS families, and friends who have been affected by violent crimes. KovsieFootball and UFS Protection Services stand united in their quest for justice, ensuring victims are well-represented and feel supported in their journey to heal and find peace. “We want to make it clear that justice must prevail over violent crime, and that our campus is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of every student. Our goal is to promote peace and reconciliation throughout the UFS community,” adds UFS Protection Services. With this joint initiative, KovsieFootball and UFS Protection Services continue to prioritize student safety, ensuring that everyone has the resources and support they need to thrive in a secure and peaceful environment.
