Varsity Football Women 2026 semi-finalists decided after round 4 action

Round four of the Varsity Football Women delivered crucial results as the race for the title intensified. UP-Tuks claimed Gauteng bragging rights with a 2-1 victory over Wits, while WSU notched up their first win of the campaign by edging CPUT 1-0 and adding to the latter’s struggles. UL then put the brakes on UJ’s impressive run, holding the high-flying side to a 1-1 draw and denying them another victory. Defending champions UWC continued their resurgence with a valuable win over TUT, strengthening their title defence and climbing into second place on the standings as the battle at the summit begins to heat up.

UP-Tuks 2-1 Wits

The University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) made a resounding statement to kick off Round 4 of the Varsity Football campaign, edging out host side Wits in a hard-fought contest at the Walter Milton C Field on Women’s Day.

The visitors wasted no time imposing their authority, striking early in the ninth minute. Capitalising on a poorly defended corner kick delivered from the right flank, Palesa Hlongwane pounced on the opportunity to slot home the opener for Tuks. Bolstered by the early advantage, the Pretoria outfit relentlessly pinned Wits into their own half for most of the opening period.

Wits produced sporadic dangerous counter-attacks, but Tuks goalkeeper Akani Maluleke stood firm – pulling off a crucial save in the 19th minute to preserve the lead. The match grew increasingly physical in the midfield, culminating in the fixture's solitary yellow card handed to Tuks' Primrose Kopeka in the 21st minute for a heavy challenge. Despite Wits' late pressure, Tuks carried their 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Intent on sparking a turnaround, Wits introduced a double substitution at the restart, bringing on Beyonce van Wyk and Nokubonga Msimango. The tactical shift paid immediate dividends: just four minutes into the second half, a long throw-in fell to Nwabiso Qoba, who unleashed a brilliant left foot strike to restore parity.

With the score locked at 1-1, the game opened up into a captivating, end-to-end battle. However, it was Tuks who seized the decisive moment. Demonstrating true composure under pressure, skipper S’bahle Ndlovu rounded the Wits goalkeeper inside the penalty area before calmly slotting the ball into the net to reinstate the visitors' 2-1 lead.

Wits pressed hard in the closing stages in search of another equalizer, but Tuks held firm until the final whistle to secure a hard-earned 2-1 victory over the hosts.

WSU 1-0 CPUT

In a tightly contested fixture, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), powered by a decisive second-half strike from Mandisa Gumede.

The opening half played out as a cagey, mild affair, with both sides struggling to carve out high-grade scoring opportunities. Despite the lack of early goals, WSU showed clear intent in midfield through seamless combination play between captain Okuhle Mrulwa and Lilitha Mjungulwa. CPUT answered with few swift transitions of their own, as Bontle Mkhangwana and Zozibini Jim penetrated the WSU penalty area, though without severely troubling the Eastern Cape side defense.

As the match progressed, WSU began to pull the strings, forcing CPUT goalkeeper Thandiswa Gwenteshe into a series of routine saves. The breakthrough finally arrived just moments after the restart in the 46th minute. Capitalising on CPUT's failure to clear a loose ball inside the six-yard box, forward Mandisa Gumede pounced, unleashing a thunderous right-footed strike straight into the back of the net.

CPUT fought bravely to find an equalizer, but an elevated, organized second-half performance from WSU kept the opposition at bay. Gumede's solitary goal proved to be the ultimate difference, sealing all three points for the Eastern Cape side.

UL 1-1 UJ

UL showed incredible steel to hold table-toppers UJ to a dramatic 1-1 draw in an intense Round 4 clash at the Wits Stadium on Sunday evening.

Spurred on by a vocal, chanting crowd that brought the good vibes to the stands, UL went toe-to-toe with the log leaders from the opening whistle. UJ controlled much of the possession and rhythm throughout the first half, launching waves of attack. However, the Limpopo side absorbed the pressure with disciplined defending, effectively neutralizing the Orange Army’s heavy onslaught to keep the match goalless at the interval.

The fast-paced battle continued into the second half. Seeking a decisive breakthrough, UJ head coach Nthabeleng Modiko turned to her bench, ringing in five substitutions. The tactical reshuffle paid off in the 69th minute when substitute Sthembile Msomi pounced on an unhandled punch from the UL goalkeeper, turning the ball home to give UJ the lead.

Refusing to back down, UL produced a swift and emphatic response. Just moments later, Welcome Maphanga found space inside the penalty area and unleashed a venomous right-footed strike into the net to restore parity.

UL held firm through the final tense seconds to deny UJ all three points, earning a well-deserved point and handing the log leaders their first draw of the season.

TUT 0-2 UWC 

Reigning Varsity Football champions, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), closed out Round 4 in style, delivering a clinical performance to sweep aside Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) 2-0 in a high-octane encounter.

The opening exchanges were evenly poised, but UWC seized control in the 12th minute following a foul on Kearah Gentry just outside the penalty area. Stepping up to the resulting free kick, Skye Constance produced a moment of magic, curling an exquisite strike directly into the top left corner to put the titleholders ahead.

TUT searched for an immediate response, but their frustrations mounted mid-way through the half when their captain picked up a yellow card in the 28th minute for a mistimed challenge. UWC's defense held resolute under subsequent waves of pressure, taking their slender 1-0 lead into the interval.

TUT came out firing in the second half, dominating the opening ten minutes as they aggressively hunted for an equalizer. Head coach Alliance Kubayi shuffled his pack with key substitutions - introducing Tshephang Mohlala, Samkelisiwe Thwala, and Mpho Ogotseng to revitalize the Pretoria side's attack.

However, UWC delivered a swift knockout blow 11 minutes after the restart. In the 46th minute, Thembelihle Zulu’s long-range effort took a fortunate deflection off a defender, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and nestling into the net to double the lead.

Despite a shaky start to their round-robin campaign, the Cape side showcased championship composure to manage the remainder of the contest, comfortably securing all three points and firmly reigniting their title defense hopes.
