Suné Barnard determined to help UJ all the way to Varsity Netball 2026 title

Adjusting to university life and playing high-performance sport can be an uphill battle for many first-year students. However, this does not apply to Suné Barnard, a determined player who wants to help UJ lift the Varsity Netball 2026 trophy.

Joining the Orange Army this year, her decision to pull on the orange dress was driven by a desire to surround herself with the best in the business.

“One of the biggest things that attracted me to UJ was definitely the coaching,” she shares, highlighting the impact of head coach Bongiwe Msomi.

“Being coached by coach Bongi is such a privilege. She was an amazing midcourt player herself, and I have already learned so much from her.”

Beyond world-class leadership, the opportunity to train alongside national icons offers an irresistible environment for growth, says Barnard.

“Being in a netball environment with Proteas players and other high-level athletes gives me the opportunity to learn from some of the best and see what it takes to reach the highest level.”

Despite the fast-paced competitive environment, it is the culture off the court that has left the deepest impression. Describing her Varsity Netball journey as an “amazing experience”, Barnard attributes her smooth transition to the supportive environment cultivated within the squad.

“The connections I have built both on and off the court have been incredibly special. We really are a family, and everyone is so supportive and loving. I have learned so much during my first year, not only as a player but also as a person.”

Rising through the ranks comes with its share of pressure, but the young midcourt prospect approaches challenges with a mature mindset. She says overcoming the inclination to be overly self-critical has been one of her biggest hurdles, teaching her that mistakes are simply stepping stones toward improvement.

“One of the biggest lessons I have learned is to always work hard and never give up. I have also learned not to constantly compare myself to perfection or to other people. Everyone has their own journey... Instead of focusing on being perfect, I try to focus on becoming better every day.”

With her eyes set firmly on the horizon, the UJ standout has big plans for both her athletic and professional careers. On the court, Barnard says her ultimate goal is to represent South Africa as a Protea. Off the court, she remains committed to completing her degree (Sport and Exercise Science), acquiring industry experience and eventually launching her own business.

“I am grateful for the talent God has given me... I never want to take these opportunities for granted. I want to keep working hard, stay humble, continue learning, and make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.”
