NWU are determined to turn the tables when they meet UJ on Monday 30 September (17:00) in the first semi-final of the 2024 Varsity Netball tournament at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein. When the two sides met in round 5, the Orange Army beat the Eagles by 25 goals in their backyard.
Reflecting on the upcoming encounter that will decide who will progress to the final on Monday 7 October, NWU head coach Elsunet du Plessis says they have analysed their previous loss against UJ.
"We have focused on refining key areas from that game. We have worked on countering UJ's strengths, especially in their attack, and making necessary adjustments. The team is ready and motivated for this rematch."
A key concern for NWU is UJ’s height advantage in their shooting circle. Du Plessis says keeping the pressure on UJ's attack will be critical.
"Their height in the shooting circle is something we need to be prepared for. Our defence will have to be sharp, and we will focus on continuous pressure to disrupt their play."
NWU captain Martine Jordan expressed the team's excitement and determination heading into the semi-final.
"Right now, we are taking it as just another game, focusing on ourselves rather than the opponent. We are motivated and ready to showcase what we can do."
Jordan, who has been a steadying force for her teammates throughout the season, doesn’t plan on changing her approach for this critical match.
"For me, nothing changes in terms of leadership. I aim to keep my team calm and focused. We will look back at round 5 to see what worked and where we can improve, but overall, we will stick to what we know works for us."
Despite the earlier defeat to UJ, Jordan is confident that NWU’s recent form, especially after a strong performance against Maties, puts the team in a good position.
"Going into the semis, the competition essentially starts over. We are in a great space, and the focus is on maintaining the momentum we have built."
