When Jessica Matjiu takes to the court in the purple colours of NWU for Varsity Netball, she carries something more than a ball and a bib. She carries the belief of her teammates and the university.
“Representing NWU in Varsity Netball has been an honour and a privilege,” she said.

“Wearing the purple colours is more than just being on court, it is about carrying the pride of the university, the support of my teammates, and the belief of everyone who contributes to our netball family.”
With a place in last year’s SPAR National Netball Championships development squad, Matjiu’s standout moment in Varsity Netball 2025 came in the hard-fought third round victory over Maties. But it wasn’t for the scoreboard, rather for the way the team played for one another, Jessica said.
“What made it so special wasn’t just the result but the way everyone gave their best and worked to make the person next to them shine and look good. That game showed the true meaning of teamwork.”
Having to overcome injury to be able to play in this year’s Varsity Netball tournament present its own test.
“It was difficult physically but even more challenging mentally because I had to stay positive and patient when I wasn’t able to contribute the way I wanted to,” she recalled. Recovery, a steady role in training, and support from teammates and coaches helped her rebuild momentum.
Jessica’s life off the court has echoed the challenges on it. She spoke of late-night work on assignments, tight schedules and the discipline it required.
“I remind myself that I am not only an athlete but also a student. The support from NWU has been incredible and it motivates me to keep pushing on both fronts.”
Looking ahead, she plans to finish the season by contributing in any role she can and to build toward the next level.
“I want to continue growing in the sport possibly pursuing opportunities at a higher competitive level and also give back by helping young players who look up to us. I want to show them that even through injuries and setbacks it’s possible to come back stronger.”
