Jade Atkins shining in debut season for the Stripe Generation

With the last bumper weekend of Varsity Netball 2026 looming (13-14 September) and UP-Tuks occupying the number three spot on the log, Jade Atkins is living her dream with the Stripe Generation.

“The games we played so far put us in a really good position but obviously we want to keep climbing the log … our focus is to take it one game at a time and to challenge for top spot at the end of the tournament,” says Atkins.

Cape Town-born Atkins is in her debut season for the Pretoria side and says she connects deeply with the tournament’s #ILoveIt theme.

“Varsity Netball has made me a lot more confident, in that I can compete at this level, and (it has) made me hungrier to improve and see how far I can take my netball.

“I think playing at provincial and national level, and especially being part of the Baby Proteas, prepared me for the intensity and pressure of Varsity Netball. These experiences have taught me how to stay composed under pressure, how to adapt quickly and to trust your teammates.”

Atkins was introduced to netball by her late grandmother and says stepping onto court after putting in all the work reminds her where it all started.

“A lot of my foundation came from my grandmother, and having someone who already understood the sport and could teach me at such a young age really helped develop my love for netball. She had a massive influence on the player I am today. She was there from the very beginning, teaching me all the basics. Whenever I play, I know that part of where I started is always with me.”

Tuks are the hosts for this year’s last bumper weekend and according to Atkins, the two games against log leaders UJ and Wits are must-win encounters.

“It is a demanding tournament and there is no room to switch off. Every game counts and every opportunity matters for us. It is about staying consistent and managing our bodies well so we can bring the same energy and intensity to every game.”

Atkins says the standard has been very high.

“You are playing against the best university players in the country. There is a lot of pressure as the games are competitive and people are watching from all over. That makes it a good platform as it gives players exposure which can open doors for your career.”
