FNB Players That Impressed in Varsity Football Round 3

UJ maintained their perfect start to the Varsity Football campaign, overcoming UL 2–0 in Soweto to secure a third consecutive victory and strengthen their position at the summit. Wits also claimed a valuable three points in Bloemfontein with Mxolisi Mthiya finding the net against defending champions UFS. There was little to separate TUT and Tuks in the Tshwane derby, with the sides settling for a 1–1 draw at Tuks Stadium. UWC and DUT could not find a breakthrough as the two teams played to a goalless stalemate.

Here are the players who made the biggest impact in their respective matches.

Mxolisi Mthiya – (Wits)

He scored a brace for Wits, with two powerful strikes, the second of which was simply sublime. He asked questions of the UFS defence almost every time he found himself with the ball and space, proving a constant threat throughout the match.

Tshepo Mosieleng (UJ)

He displayed growth, endurance and agility in UJ’s Round 3 fixture against the University of Limpopo. His contributions to the UJ men’s team not only earned him the FNB Player of the Match on Friday night, but he also navigated the field with impressive skill and pace, setting up his fellow forwards with impactful passing. He scored his second goal in three matches, becoming a potential Golden Boot Award contender for the 2026 Varsity Football tournament.

Matome Rangata - UP Tuks

The Tshwane derby saw spoils being shared and no bragging rights claimed. The end-to-end high tempo clash was perfect for explosive wingers like Matome Rangata. Rangata tormented TUT defense with his skills and pace on the flanks. The solid performance displayed by Rangata earned him a player of the match accolade to cement his influence in the fiercely contested Tshwane derby.

“It’s a nice feeling to win player of the match, it’s bittersweet because as much as I could enjoy winning the man of the match, we did not win the game, and all that hard work went to a draw. On other days we will convert those chances and finish the game.”

Phiwayinkosi Mchunu – (DUT)

The No. 10 put in an impressive performance for much of the game, showing his versatility by playing as a striker, dropping into defence and eventually operating in midfield. He has been a crucial component in the DUT setup and played a big role in their draw with 2024 champions UWC.
