UJ maintained their perfect start to the Varsity Football campaign, overcoming UL 2–0 in Soweto to secure a third consecutive victory and strengthen their position at the summit. Wits also claimed a valuable three points in Bloemfontein with Mxolisi Mthiya finding the net against defending champions UFS. There was little to separate TUT and Tuks in the Tshwane derby, with the sides settling for a 1–1 draw at Tuks Stadium. UWC and DUT could not find a breakthrough as the two teams played to a goalless stalemate. Here are the players who made the biggest impact in their respective matches. Mxolisi Mthiya – (Wits) He scored a brace for Wits, with two powerful strikes, the second of which was simply sublime. He asked questions of the UFS defence almost every time he found himself with the ball and space, proving a constant threat throughout the match. Tshepo Mosieleng (UJ) He displayed growth, endurance and agility in UJ’s Round 3 fixture against the University of Limpopo. His contributions to the UJ men’s team not only earned him the FNB Player of the Match on Friday night, but he also navigated the field with impressive skill and pace, setting up his fellow forwards with impactful passing. He scored his second goal in three matches, becoming a potential Golden Boot Award contender for the 2026 Varsity Football tournament. Matome Rangata - UP Tuks The Tshwane derby saw spoils being shared and no bragging rights claimed. The end-to-end high tempo clash was perfect for explosive wingers like Matome Rangata. Rangata tormented TUT defense with his skills and pace on the flanks. The solid performance displayed by Rangata earned him a player of the match accolade to cement his influence in the fiercely contested Tshwane derby. “It’s a nice feeling to win player of the match, it’s bittersweet because as much as I could enjoy winning the man of the match, we did not win the game, and all that hard work went to a draw. On other days we will convert those chances and finish the game.” Phiwayinkosi Mchunu – (DUT) The No. 10 put in an impressive performance for much of the game, showing his versatility by playing as a striker, dropping into defence and eventually operating in midfield. University of Limpopo midfielder Malwandla Makamu is embracing the experience of competing in Varsity Football while acknowledging the challenges UL have faced since returning to the competition. Makamu enrolled at the University of Limpopo in 2022 and is currently studying BSc Mathematical Science, known as Computer Science. His Varsity Football journey has provided him with an opportunity to compete on a bigger stage while helping UL find their feet in the tournament. "In terms of my experience in the Varsity Cup, it has been a wonderful experience because we get to see how it is in the Varsity Cup, even though I couldn't say the same in terms of the performances and everything for our team." The midfielder believes missed opportunities have contributed to UL's struggles so far. "The thing is that we haven't managed to capitalise on our chances and everything; that's why we find ourselves in the position we're in right now." Despite the setbacks, Makamu remains optimistic. "But then it's a work in progress; I still believe in my teammates and everyone - we have to judge from the fact that we haven't participated in this competition for like eight years, so the nerves and everything are poised to be there." DUT defender Zethembe Dlamini says his side are fully aware of the threat posed by UP-Tuks duo, Matome Rangata and Ntokozo Madela ahead of Friday’s crucial Varsity Football encounter. KwaZulu-Natal based side have made an encouraging start to their Varsity Football campaign, with their defensive organization standing out after the opening three matches. The men from the coast currently boast two clean sheets from three games, making them joint-second best defensive record in the competition. With a place in the semi-finals within reach, Friday’s clash against UP-Tuks could prove decisive in determining their fate. The 20-year-old, who has played a key role in DUT’s impressive defensive performances, is well aware of the attacking threat posed by the Stripe Generation and believes defensive discipline will be crucial to securing a positive result. “We are proud of our defensive record of two clean sheets in three games. It shows the hard work of the team and that if we are united, nothing can defeat us,” said the young Harding born. “We know UP-Tuks have quality players like Ntokozo Madela and Matome Rangata. We respect them. They are experienced and dangerous, but we have been preparing well defensively as a unit, and we have a plan to try to contain them.” Rangata has been one of Tuks’ standout performers this season, having already claimed two Man of the Match awards this season meaning that DUT’s defensive unit will face a stern test when the two sides meet this Friday. Despite this danger, Dlamini believes his team’s positive mindset will be key as they stand at a window-peak point of view of a historic semi-final qualification. “Friday’s game against UP-Tuks is very important for us to qualify for the semi-final. Our mindset as a team is positive and we are fully focused on the game.” The young defender says his team will also be counting on home advantage to give them an extra boost at the Harry Gwala Stadium. With the support of their local faithful behind them, Dlamini believes there is hope for his team to produce a memorable performance, promising to fight until the end. “Playing at home in KZN means a lot to us. The support from our community gives our team extra motivation and belief, so we are grateful to play this match at the Harry Gwala.
