UFS Kovsies have built their reputation not only on talent but also on leadership that sustains their winning culture. This year, co-captains Reratilwe Letsoalo and Xandri Fourie carry that mantle, shaping both performance and team identity.
For Letsoalo, leadership begins before the whistle.

“If we don’t all buy into the team motto, if we don’t stand for the same things, then it’s difficult to lead individuals,” she explained. She focuses on connection during warm-ups, ensuring trust and communication can withstand pressure.
“When things get tough, if we’ve built that connection, we can look each other in the eye and know we have each other’s backs.”
She admits the role comes with challenges, reflecting on the loss against UJ (50-53).
“It felt like seven against nine at one stage. I was struggling with my own challenges while also trying to pull everyone together. That was one of the toughest leadership moments I’ve had.”

Fourie draws from her experience with the SA Fast5 squad and Proteas trials. Exposure on that level has shaped her into a more resilient, strategic player.
“It’s not just about talent. It’s about perseverance and mentality. I want to show the younger players they also have the strength to push through and grow,” she said.
Together, the co-captains reflect the Kovsie values of unity, discipline, and excellence. Letsoalo stressed that leadership never excuses personal performance, while Fourie emphasized leading by example on and off the court.
Former captain Refiloe Nketsa believes they are continuing an important legacy.
“They’re handling the responsibility quite well, and they’re still to grow in it. Every team has different needs, and you have to adapt to different generations. Being Kovsies captain isn’t just a title, it’s a responsibility and a purpose.”
Nketsa highlights longevity as key to Kovsie netball.
“We’re not only building depth on court, but in leadership too. That’s how the Kovsie netball legacy stays alive.”
This season, Letsoalo and Fourie carry that torch, ensuring the Kovsie culture remains unshaken.
