Recap of the 2025 Varsity Football Women's Season with goals and highlights

The 2025 Varsity Football Women's tournament delivered everything supporters have come to expect from South Africa's premier university football competition. There were dominant performances, dramatic derby encounters, breakout stars, record scorelines and a historic championship as UWC secured a third consecutive Varsity Football Women's title. Here's how it played out in last year's tournament.

Defending champions lay down an early marker:

Defending champions UWC began their title defence with a hard fought 2 to 1 victory over TUT in one of the standout fixtures of the opening round. Chelsea Daniels produced the decisive moment with a superb long range strike to secure all three points.

Elsewhere, UJ announced themselves as genuine title contenders with an emphatic 4 to 0 victory over NWU. Thato Mofolo stole the headlines with a superb hat trick as the Orange Army controlled proceedings from start to finish.

UWC make history with a ten goal masterclass:

Round two produced one of the most remarkable performances in Varsity Football Women's history.

UWC dismantled UNIVEN 10 to 0 in a ruthless attacking display that sent a clear warning to the rest of the competition. Captain Tiffany Kortjie and Chelsea Daniels each recorded hat tricks.

The Johannesburg derby also lived up to expectations as UJ defeated Wits 2 to 0. After a goalless first half, Gugulethu Dlamini finally broke the deadlock before tournament top scorer Thato Mofolo sealed another important victory.

The Tshwane derby between TUT and UP Tuks ended honours even after a weather interruption caused by lightning, while NWU bounced back from their opening defeat to beat CPUT 2 to 1.

The playoffs delivered high drama:

With places in the championship match at stake, the intensity increased dramatically during the semi-finals. UWC booked their place in yet another final after grinding out a disciplined 1 to 0 victory over Wits.

UJ ensured the final would feature a classic North versus South showdown after producing an excellent 3 to 0 victory over TUT.

Thato Mofolo continued her outstanding campaign by opening the scoring before goals from Sthembile Msomi and Shannon Macomo completed a convincing semifinal victory and secured revenge for the previous year's elimination.

UWC complete the treble:

The championship decider brought together two of the tournament's outstanding teams as defending champions UWC faced hosts UJ before a packed crowd at UJ Soweto Stadium.

Just moments after halftime, captain Tiffany Kortjie produced the defining moment of the season.

Her 46th minute strike proved enough to separate the two sides and secure a narrow 1 to 0 victory, handing UWC an unprecedented third consecutive Varsity Football Women's championship.
